A list Ove A Year Way Another South Georgia Island Visit

In just a little over a year, I will hopefully (pandemic depending) be heading to Ushuaia, Argentina to board the Ocean Nova for yet another voyage to the most incredible location on the planet.  Our trip is being hosted by one of my companies Rockhopper Workshops.  It’s a 20-day trip visiting the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica.  It is the ultimate bucket list trip.

The image above was a shot as we approached S. Georgia Island.  This place never disappoints with great light and clouds and is teaming with wildlife.

Getting The Shot

Palouse Falls

I miss traveling so much. For someone like myself who has been traveling at least a month for years and years, being stuck at home is devastating.   So, the images I am sharing now are from past trips.  This image is from one of my favorite places, the Palouse.  Specifically Palouse FAlls at the State Park.  This is showing the spot I use most to cover both the falls and canyon.  If you are lucky when photographing here you can catch cloudy and stormy skies or the sunset.  I usually use a 16mm lens here.  Put on a neutral density filter and I can then do 20- 50-second exposures and get that cool looking smooth waterfall look.  The picture below is a group shot from one of my workshops in the Palouse.  The 2021 workshops in the Palouse are sold out.

Lemaire Channel Pano

Any long time reader here knows that Antarctica is my favorite place.  I have been there over 20 times and do a trip or two a year.  We were lucky to get the trip this year in February before everything shut down.  One of the favorite locations in Antarctica to experience is the Lemaire channel.  This a narrow channel between two large mountains is a highlight of Antarctica travel. On a trip a few years ago I did a 30 exposure pano of the channel showing both ends.  as the ship was moving forward I set up my camera in a vertical position and turned the drive to low.  I then set my first exposure at the end of the channel from where we began and then panned right while the camera was on auto-drive.  This made a lot of exposures to blend but assured I would have enough for good overlaps and creating the pano.  The pano was made in photoshop.  I think this a unique image of a popular location, thus accomplishing what I always like to do is finding a different way to see something that so many people photograph.

Antarctica 2020

This has been a strange year.  It all began with loads of optimism and has turned out to be something totally surreal.  The Worldwide Pandemic has changed everything.  But, before the Pandemic started I was lucky to get an Antratcia Workshop in and with Art Wolfe and Michael Durr as well as 28 guests.  We took this trip onboard The Magellan Explorer, a brand new ship run by Antarctica 21 the charter company I have been using for years.  Thie trip was an incredible experience and I wrote an article over on photoPXL.com with four videos and the trip log for the trip.  With this blog entry, I have included four photos but the article on PXL has a lot more plus the video will blow you away.  You can find the article at Antarctica Workshop Expedition 2020 – February 15-21, 2020.

Please check it out and enjoy the content and think about joining us in November 2021 when we take a 21-day journey to South Georgia Island and Antarctica.  This is the ultimate Antarctica Experience.

It’s Been So Long – Sorry

It’s been too long since my last post.  When the Pandemic was declared and we went into lockdown things changed a lot and this blog lost its priority for me.  Then Debra’s dad got sick and died of Covid-19 and then Debra caught COVID and we have a crisis with that.  For now, things have settled down and we are into a new normal.    I can’t say I l like the new normal.  But, Debra and I have decided to stay as much in s=isolation as we can and avoid other people.  Somehow I managed not to get infected and thus I am really being careful. After seeing her spend 16 days in bed in what was by the worst sickness she ever had I would like to see f I can pass on that experience. So we only go out to the stores for supplies or do the curbside pick-up from our favorite restaurants.

During the lockdown, I have had a chance to go back through a lot of images.  I am cataloging old sessions to make them easier to work with and reprocessing many of my images,  Today we start off with an iceberg shot that was part of one of my stories One Iceberg Many Looks story.  For this shot, I opened it on my Pad and then sued Snapseen and DidtressedFX+ to radically change the image for a more dynamic image.  It’s just one was as photographers we can express ourselves using the many digital tools available.

Fishing In Mexico

About 4 years ago my friend Micahel Reichmann and I decided to travel and do a deep Mexico photo adventure.  I mean really deep and we went places that many Americans probably have not gone.  It was scary every now and then.  Most people were very friendly and it gave us a chance to see how special Mexico is in its beautiful landscape possibilities.  These two images were made near an area with a flooded lake and the fishermen were out in drives.  There was a real peace and serenity at this location.  We were fortunate enough to be high up on a hill shooting down so it gave. unique perspective.

Polar Bears Jumping

I presume you may know that I also run workshops to amazing locations all around the world.  You can find these workshops at Rockhopper Workshops.  One of the places we visit is the Arctic and what an amazing place it is.  These two polar bears were photographed on one of my Svalbard workshops a few years ago.  On these workshops, we sometimes drive our small ship deep into the arctic ice and search for polar bears.  We get real close and shut the engines down and drift and if we are lucky polar bears come to us.  This polar bear was photographed from about fifty feet off of the ship.  The bear was jumping from ice flow to ice flow and sometimes even swimming.  These are magnificent animal.s

I still have room on my August 2020 workshop and info can be found at Rockhopper Workshops.  Maybe you’d consider joining us.

Gum Trees

Gum Tree
Gum Tree, Australia

There are many things to love about Australia.  I have a lot of fo friends there and have traveled there a number of times.  The landscapes can be really beautiful.  Throughout the centra; part of Australia there are these beautiful gum trees.  These are gorgeous shaped trees with white bark.  As in this picture, the white bark really contrasts with the bluff walls in Orbiston Gorge.

Nature Reclaims Her World

Life Out Of Rust
Life out of an old rusted train car

Nature has patience.  And, with all my travels I have seen many times how nature reclaims what is here.  Whether it be a Forrest devastated by. fire, an abandoned house or rusty and rotting machines.  Mother nature always wins.  She has immense patience.  In this image, I was walking through a train yeard looking for abstract photo opportunities.  I stopped at this one train car and found this. A small but of a plant of some kind growing in the rusty dust form the boxcar door of this train.  Nature always finds a way.
