Black Church

The Black Church in Iceland is famous.  It’s a small church sitting on a peninsula and unlike so many other churches, it is painted black.  There is a cemetery and the church and cemetery are surrounded by a stone wall.  It’s very picturesque and as a result, is also very cliched.  Every tourist has a photo of this church as well as a ton of photographers.  I have always endeavored to make locations like this look new and original.

I did this image with my Sony a7r iii and then took the image into my iPad and worked on it in a few apps to give it a different look.  I like the way it turned out and I made a nice small print of it too.

Remembering Tuscany

I miss traveling and by now I  must sound like a broken record.  A few years ago I  visited Tuscany while leading a workshop there with Art Wolfe.  Here are a select few images showing just how colorful Tuscany is.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year. It is time to forget 2020 and move forward with optimism, hope and especially love. Like many of you 2020 is a year I hope I never have to repeat it’s a year like we never could have imagined. All I know now is that I want to move forward, travel again and look through the viewfinder and take more pictures than I ever have before.
I wish all of you a great year moving forward and that we can all find a way to come together again, put differences aside, and realize that we are best when were united I am looking and seeing the love that is around us.

South Georgia Island

I Miss Greenland

If it wasn’t for the pandemic I would have just been returning from Greenland.  I do photo workshops and tours there every year except this one.  I miss Greenland and need to get back there.  I do have 2 back to back workshops scheduled there for next year.  You can find information for this workshop HERE.  By next year we are pretty confident that we will have a vaccine and be good to go.  These workshops are booking up so if interested please think about booking soon.

Getting The Shot

Palouse Falls

I miss traveling so much. For someone like myself who has been traveling at least a month for years and years, being stuck at home is devastating.   So, the images I am sharing now are from past trips.  This image is from one of my favorite places, the Palouse.  Specifically Palouse FAlls at the State Park.  This is showing the spot I use most to cover both the falls and canyon.  If you are lucky when photographing here you can catch cloudy and stormy skies or the sunset.  I usually use a 16mm lens here.  Put on a neutral density filter and I can then do 20- 50-second exposures and get that cool looking smooth waterfall look.  The picture below is a group shot from one of my workshops in the Palouse.  The 2021 workshops in the Palouse are sold out.

Lemaire Channel Pano

Any long time reader here knows that Antarctica is my favorite place.  I have been there over 20 times and do a trip or two a year.  We were lucky to get the trip this year in February before everything shut down.  One of the favorite locations in Antarctica to experience is the Lemaire channel.  This a narrow channel between two large mountains is a highlight of Antarctica travel. On a trip a few years ago I did a 30 exposure pano of the channel showing both ends.  as the ship was moving forward I set up my camera in a vertical position and turned the drive to low.  I then set my first exposure at the end of the channel from where we began and then panned right while the camera was on auto-drive.  This made a lot of exposures to blend but assured I would have enough for good overlaps and creating the pano.  The pano was made in photoshop.  I think this a unique image of a popular location, thus accomplishing what I always like to do is finding a different way to see something that so many people photograph.

Antarctica 2020

This has been a strange year.  It all began with loads of optimism and has turned out to be something totally surreal.  The Worldwide Pandemic has changed everything.  But, before the Pandemic started I was lucky to get an Antratcia Workshop in and with Art Wolfe and Michael Durr as well as 28 guests.  We took this trip onboard The Magellan Explorer, a brand new ship run by Antarctica 21 the charter company I have been using for years.  Thie trip was an incredible experience and I wrote an article over on photoPXL.com with four videos and the trip log for the trip.  With this blog entry, I have included four photos but the article on PXL has a lot more plus the video will blow you away.  You can find the article at Antarctica Workshop Expedition 2020 – February 15-21, 2020.

Chile Soldiers

While in Punta Arenas I was taking a nap in mid-afternoon when I heard drums and trumpets.  I looked out the window looking over the town square and saw soldiers marching through the street.  I grabbed my camera and rushed out of the hotel and found there was a changing of the colors ceremony going on.  So, I spent an hour shooting the ceremony and this is one of the shots I liked.  I used a 100-400mm zoom on my Sony a7riv.  I changed and did wide-angle shots and covered this event from multi-angles.  It was a good exercise.  I just like this image as it was defining without showing faces.  What do you think?
