Patagonia Morning

Good Morning Patagonia

There is no question that Patagonia is a great place for landscape photographers.  This can be seen every day when you view social media.  Every photographer in the world seems to be heading there to shoot landscape images.  I have visited the location several times and yes, I will go back again.  The stunning landscape, sunsets and sunrises and the dynamic landscape make me want to stay there for months just to see what I may be missing.

This image was made on a two-day hike and was shot just after sunrise.

The Lonely Piano

Lone Piano, Music room in the community center of Pyramiden, Svalbard

A long boat ride from Longyearbyen, Svalbard sits an abandoned city that was once a thriving Russian coal mine.  I have visited this location on just about every visit I have made to Svalbard.  It’s an incredible place and is a ton of fun to photograph in.  This is an image from the community center’s music room.  I’ll have more images from this amazing place in the coming weeks.

Seeing The Bean Different

The Bean in Chicago

The Chicago Bean is one of the most iconic places to take photos in Chicago.  I like that as it gives me a chance to find something that may never have been seen before.  It’s an opportunity to see something different.  These are not easy images to do as we are influenced so often from what we have seen others do.  With the Bean, I walked around and crawled around and looked through the camera and realized there were numerous opportunities to get a unique image.  This one works with the identifiable people in the bottom center and after that, it just goes crazy.  It works because it makes a view stop to see the image and try to figure it out.

Sometimes You Just Luck Out

Double Exposure. Silo City, Buffalo, NY

You have recently seen a number of images from my Silo City series.  Usually, I am shooting with one of my larger setups like a Sony or Nikon while at these locations.  However, I also do a lot of experimenting and I also use my iPhone and try out new apps.  The app this was made with is called Hipstamatic.  It allows for a different variety of double exposure looks.  I do these exposures in color and BW.  This was a color one of the grain silos from across the canal.  It just worked with the tug boats at the right spot as well as the soft look of the silos in the background.  Hope you enjoy it.

NYC Reflections

Highline Stairs, NYC

Street photography in New York City is always fun and usually quite productive photography wise.  I enjoy it because what you photograph usually is not a cliche.  It’s there for a short period of time and then is gone as time and the world moves on.    This image was done on a staircase coming down from the Highline.  I did a double exposure and caught reflections.  A win-win I think.

Whale Tail

Whale tail in Antarctica

I have photographed a lot of whales over the years.  One of the coolest things to see is a humpback whale when it dives as its tail comes out of the water for a few seconds and when it does water flows off of it.  This shot I like because of the colors from the setting sun.  It adds color and texture in the reflections of the water.

The Eye

The Londo Eye

London offers unique opportunities for some cool cityscapes and street photography.  It also challenges a photographer to find a new way of seeing iconic sites.  The London Eye is not only a captivating icon of London, but also one photographed a thousand times a day.  I tend to always be looking at things differently and in this case, I found the chimneys of building working well with the London Eye to give a different kind of view.   I made two versions of this image.  One was straight black and white and the other I toned and added a texture.

Which one do you prefer?

The London Eye, Toned and Tectured

The Purple Door

The Purple Door, Silo City, Buffalo, NY

As I have featured before Silo City in Buffalo, NY offers some great photo opportunities.  This shot was made while I was wandering around outside of the facility.  I found this purple door and a lot of junk covering it.  I simply composed and shot.  I then did some enhancements in post-processing to raise contrast and color and make the image a bit more striking.

Silo City And The Human

Below The Silo, Silo City, Buffalo, NY

This image was part of one of my more favorite days of photography.  This image was made in Buffalo NY at Silo City.  Silo City is a major complex of mostly abandoned gigantic grain silos.  A friend Mark Maio, holds annual workshops at this location and you are given full access to the complex.  If you are into the urbanex type of photography you’ll find this location a dream come true.  I have been to this location an number of times and never tire of it.  On this particular trip, I hired a model for a half a day and we had a blast photographing in as many places as we could find.

This one location which is below a silo over a hundred feet tall.  I loved the chutes and light and asked the model to pose in ways that mimicked these machines.  The backlight was just right and the symmetry of the columns all lead to a cool image in the end.

The Tower Bridge

As a photographer, one of the most frustrating things, especially in the social media times we are in is coming up with an image of an iconic place that hasn’t been done before.  This challenge is also a good one for our everyday photography endeavors.  On a trip to London, I spent a day walking the city.  This is one of the images that I made to show an iconic location differently.  I looked up and thought it would compose well as a square and then used the square format to compose the image.

In post-processing, I converted the image to BW and then added the frame using Topaz Studio.
