Made it to Ireland. Today I picked up Steve on of the PODAS instructors and Drew our Phase One support person and we headed to the LAke Hotel where we will be based until Wednesday. IT’s been an adventurous day as I had to rent a van (one of five) we will be using. Crazy thing is the steering wheel is on the wrong side and they make you drive on the wrong side of the road. Pretty crazy and add to that it is a stick shift and you have to shift with your left hand. They call this civilized. I have another few words for it. Should make for an interesting week. This is a simple iPhone shot done of the lake in front of this wonderful hotel. we bring the big guns (Cameras) out tomorrow. This is a very photo rich area and I am sure we will be capturing some wonderful photography. I’ll try to post daily but it may get busy. Days are long and light is good. More to come.

Another Big Sky
This a beautifully simple image from the Palouse area of Washington. I love this area so much that I am leading a photography workshop there in August. We have 25 attendees with three world class instructors. Check out www.phaseone.com/podas for for information about this workshop and others. what you see here is what you get there. No defined areas to shoot just a lot of great back roads and rolling hills and such.
Rusty Wheel Thingy
By the time you read this I’ll be in Ireland. I pre-scheduled this post and it is a follow up to yesterdays image. More from the same mechanic’s yard. This is a rusty wheel thingy.
A Place
While at my sons wedding a few weeks ago I went exploring and found this corner mechanics shop with a variety of old and rusty things. The place was a photographers dream thus for the next day or so you will see images from there. This was one that was just randomly nailed to the wall of the building. Why a license plate and a horseshoe? Don’t know but it caught my eye. There were old tricks, gears, junk, and even a truck that was sold old it had to be from the thirties. It had a big Redwood tree still on it’s bed and there was tree growing out of it. Look for more soon.
Death Valley – Storm Coming
One thing I love about photographing in the west is the wide open – big sky feel that you get. You can see so far and so high and you get a perspective that you can’t get when you live with obscured horizons and trees everywhere. This was shot in Death Valley on the road to Beatty.
The B&W Palladium
A few posts ago I published a color HDR version of the NEW Performing Arts Center – Palladium in Carmel, IN. Here’s yet another in a Black & White version. This building is so cool that I will be shooting it under different conditions for some time to come. Hope to start interior photos with the IQ 180 very soon.
I am heading to Ireland on Wednesday so the blog may be spotty as it will depend on internet connections where I am traveling. I’ll be leading a PODAS workshop and we will be visiting some magnificent locations. Look for images to be coming your way.
Neon Abstract
Another image from the Neon Bone Yard In Las Vegas. shot and did HDR post processing on all the images made here. Why? Because I made it my assignment. Sometimes when I go out shooting I give myself a challenge or assignment. This one was shoot 5 exposures of everything and put them together after. The results are interesting and lend to the abstractness of this wonderful place. Part of the secret in shooting at the Neon Bone Yard is shooting tight and shooting just elements. fun place – fun pictures.
Hole In The Ice
This shot is just cool. Cruising an area in Antarctica we cam across a bay with lots of ice. So, we hopped in the Zodiacs and took a cruise. This is one shot from that cruise. Not a spectacular one but a cool one.
Gypsy
One of the most fun things to do (in my opinion) is to get in the car and go explore. I did this the past weekend and I have more shots to post from that adventure. Today’s image is one I did in Michigan at a place called Sunset Juuque. It’s kind of like a Disneyland of junk. All neatly arranged in these little set ups by the clever owner. This is one I call Sad Gypsy. I discovered this place because I was just driving around. No matter where I go I like to drive and explore. If I see something I stop and check it out. A lot of the times I end up shooting it. You have to capture the moment. Odds are this set up is not there anymore. It could have moved or just rotted away. You have to get it when you see it. This was done with my basic set up of a Canon 5dII and 24-105 lens.
Old Trucks
Seems on my last few trips I have been finding a lot of old trucks wherever I go. I love old stuff, rust and decay. Can’t get enough of it. During my sons wedding weekend we went out exploring and came upon a place with a lot of old rusty trucks and things. So, naturally I had to take some photos. Because of the light – heavy overcast, light drizzle I did HDR 2 under, over and normal exposures on my Canon 5dII. This image is the first of a few taken at just this one stop. Look for more in the coming days.
Also, in a week I will be in Ireland leading a PODAS workshop with 15 photographers. I’ll be posting from there so stay tuned. You can also follow the trip at the PODAS BLOG.
