On my recent trip to the Palouse of Washington state I came back with a ton of great images. I’ll rave about that area for a long time but it is truly a special place to photograph. This shot was done after driving along a ridge on a giant wheat field. here we found two harvesters dumping their load of fresh cut grain. I just like the mechanical and natural landscape all wrapped up in one shot.
Las Vegas is a great city and there is so much there it can overwhelm your senses. Once a year on one of my many trips there I visit the Neon Boneyard and have fun shooting images there. This is one I did playing with color and angles. Sometimes it is just good to go out and use the viewfinder to put a frame around something and explore through the viewfinder. When you see something that works (like this) you shoot the shot.
In two weeks I’ll be leading a PODAS workshop into Death Valley with photographers from China. This will be a great experience to share with them the beauty of what Death Valley can offer photographically as well making some new friends. The language differences should make for some challenges teaching but we think we have that worked out. There are so many cool things to see and shoot in Death Valley. This will be a great trip. The image above was made with an IQ180 in Death Valley this past spring at what is know as the Race Track. Fascinating place where rocks move and leave trails behind them. No one has ever seen them move or know exactly how they move. What ever the reason it makes great shooting.
Got cold here today (chilly) but none the less I thought ice. So, it’s iceberg picture time. Another image from thousands that I have of ice and cold in Antarctica. This was a beautiful blue iceberg that slipped into a bay where our ship was anchored. we did a Zodiac cruise around it and I shot a number of angles. I like this low angle and the deep blue. Shot with a Phase One P65+ and a 28mm lens hand held.
One of the prettiest places to visit in the fall is Zion National Park. The colors there as the season changes are incredible. Zion is a small park but offers a lot of diversity in photography. After October 31st the park opens to cars and then you can explore and stop and shoot images like the one above. This was shot with a Phase One P65+.
Sometimes I just like to mess around and have fun. It’s not always about the perfect landscape, the chilly dawn shot or the angle. Sometimes it is just about taking an iPhone out because you saw something that looked good and shooting it. This is the headlight of a sports car. It looked good. Symmetry and balance combined with color. It was shot with the Hipstamatic app on the iPhone and then taken a bit further in SnapSeeed an ipad app. Oh, and it just is fun!
This is a shot that I always liked and finally decided to post. It was shot in Buenos Aires which is an interesting place to visit. Lots of rust and abandoned ships and buildings. This guy was just rowing his boat up this extremely busy and dirty river. He had a mission and purpose. I messed with the image a bit and grunged it a bit. I love the way his face peeks out and the splash from his oar.
In August I lead a photography workshop PODAS to the Palouse area of Washington. I have been posting a number of images from this trip as time allows. This one is one of those real special ones. It was shot on the first morning of the workshop and a weather from was coming in. We were on a small bluff overlooking this quaint little valley and all the elements just lined up for what turned out to be an hour of incredible photography. Ill post more from this one morning over the coming weeks. Enjoy this one today.
I am still recovering from my shoulder surgery. My arm is in a sling and I have a few more weeks to go. I am still uncomfortable much of the time but my physical therapist says I am doing good. So, all this make it very frustrating being a photographer and not being able to lift a camera. I’m going nuts. So, I ventured out this past weekend with my friend and shooting buddy Debra and went for a drive. I shot everything on an iPhone. Even that was difficult left handed but I was shooting none the less. So today’s image was from on of our first stops. There are more images coming. This is an old tractor parked in the front yard of some farmer. It was one of those crisp colorful days and the tractor worked into it well. I used the Hipstamatic camera to catch this shot. So you thought pot holes in the US were bad. Look at these bubbling hot pot holes in Iceland. Actually this one of many geo-thermal fields scattered around Iceland. What you miss is the smell. Very stinky and very beautiful.
