Merry Christmas From Debra and Me

Kevin Raber and Debra Fadely – Raber on the Ocean Nova in Antarctica

It has been a good year with moments of great sadness and wonderful happiness.  Life goes on and sometimes we find strength from our losses and sadness.  This was my case this year.  I look forward to 2017.  I am blessed to have a career I love. A wife I am totally in love with and our kids who we are very proud of and love dearly.  This photograph was made by our friend Hans Strand an outstanding photographer from Sweeden who was on our trip to South Georgia Island and Antarctica.  I wish all of my readers a happy holiday and a great new year.

We Are Back In Many Ways

Today we launched the NEW Kevinraber.com. reabereyes.com website.  One of the things I did for a long time was to make a post a day with one of my photographs and the story behind it.  Today we are back with the new look.

We are also back from Antarctica and South Georgia Island.  What a fantastic trip to such an amazing place.  I lead a ship of 68 photographers to this amazing place, and for 21 days we had an adventure of a lifetime.  You’ll read more about this in coming weeks.

I look forward to sharing more photos and stories.  Also, the new site will also have the articles I have written for Luminous-Landscpe.com the site that I am publisher and CEO of.

Bringing In The Wheat

Harvest In The Palouse
Harvest In The Palouse

The Palouse is one of my favorite places to photograph.  If you are a regular to my blog you know I have many images made there.  I love the harvest time which usually takes place in early August.  This past year it was very dry and the harvest came very early.  The Palouse suffered a very hot summer and thus it was dry and dusty.  This image show the harvest and the dry dusty wind.

I’m Back, So Here We Go

Sunrise At The Iceberg Lagoon, Iceland
Sunrise At The Iceberg Lagoon, Iceland

I must apologize.  No excuses, but I was super busy for the last few months on Luminous-LAndscape business.  I literally was running out of hours in a day.  So, I am now back and will do my best to get back to the routine of an image a day.   Please accept my apologies for the long absence.

I’ll kick off the new images with a shot from last week when I was in Iceland leading  workshop.  It was a great workshop with some great people.  The light lasted 24 hours a day and it was non-stop photography.  One morning we woke up and it was grey and cloudy but none the less we headed to the Iceberg Lagoon to shoot sunrise.  As it is with Iceland weather the whole grey sky changed in the 10 minute drive there.  The clouds started to part and beautiful gold sun started to peak through.  This is the shot of an iceberg with the sun common up.  Oh my do I love Iceland.  Made with a Nikon D800e and a 70-200mm lens.

Tree

Tree NZI have been spending what little spare time I have organizing my photos from the last few years.  It’s a mammoth task and one I say I will stay on top of from now on.  Here’s to hoping I do.  This is an image I found shot 2 years ago in New Zealand.  This a tree that is photographed a lot.  I guess because it sits out in this filed and a small pond by itself.  Once again I saw it in B&W.

Boats

Boats - Cornwall, UK
Boats – Cornwall, UK

While traveling in Cornwall, UK a few months ago I was trying out and doing a lot of testing with the Olympus OMD E-M1 camera.  At one point we were crossing a river on a ferry and I saw these anchored ships and sailboat.  I thought it would be interesting to shoot with a long lens compressing the background in the shot.  It looked in the end best in Black and White.

Aqua Towers – Chicago, Take 1

Aqua Towers, Chicago
Aqua Towers, Chicago

I love Chicago.  It’s one city I never get tired of shooting in.  The architecture is second to none and offers the urban landscape photographer so many possibilities.  This image was made right after sunrise of the Aqua Towers.  This is a giant condo building that is designed to look like a wave.  The trick is to use a long lens, expose for the highlights and shoot the building in high contrast with am abstract look.  I shot this with a Fuji X-t1 and 55-200mm lens.

One of the places almost everyone who visits the Antarctica Peninsula visits is the Lemaire Channel.  This is narrow channel with huge cliffs and mountains rising from either side.  It has never disappointed me on any of my visits.  On my last trip I wanted to show the channel in a different way.  So, once we were in the middle of the channel I shot 12 exposure while panning the camera from a moving ship.  I later stitched these together in Photoshop.  This is the result where you can see both openings of the channel.  I am presenting a Color and BW version for your viewing pleasure.
