Organ Grinder

Organ Grinder, Cologne, Germany

In my travels I love to wander the streets and see what can be found.  This is called street photography.  This shot was taken in Cologne Germany of a man in a public square grinding an organ.  I couldn’t resist.  Originally shot on a Leica M8 and then on my iPad I played with it a bit.  Hope you are staying cool.  It is so hot out that it is hard to breathe.  If this breaks there will be some major storms.  Might be some good photography too.

Another Hot Day In Indy – Cool Day In The Forrest

Waterfall - Olympic National Park, Washington

I am trying to think of the right adjective to describe just how hot it is in Indy, so insert your own.  It’s XXXXXXX HOT!.  I don’t do good in heat above 80 degrees.  Maybe why I like colder climates like Antarctica and the mountains so much.  It looks like we are in for record-breaking hots days for the for the next week.  Air conditioners can’t even keep up.  So, I thought we should venture into the woods and view some cool waterfalls for today.  This image was shot in Olympic National Park and it just feels cool.  I feel better when I look at it, hope you do too.

Back To Rust

Rust - Antarctica

Here is a real simple shot made in Antarctica.  I haven’t posted any rust shots for a while and thought today would be a good day to bring you rust.  This was a cover of a tank hatch at a whaling station in Antarctica.  I took some creative liberties with in on Snapseed  on the iPad.  I like it!

I am home now and major catch up mode after weeks on the road.  Adventures took me form Ireland to China and then to Chicago.  Great stuff, great PODAS workshops, super nice new friends.  But, it is always good to be home.  I have a few small trips in the next few weeks before heading to the Palouse for a major PODAS workshop there.  Also, we launched a new workshop yesterday in the UK with Miss Anelia and Drew Gardner.  Check it out!

Self Portrait In Chicago

Self Portrait At The Bean

I have been to Chicago many times and have enjoyed it tremendously for all the photo opportunities it offers.  Never though have I come back with so many real keepers of Chicago.  The last several days as I have been leading a PODAS Architectural workshop in Chicago has been fantastic.  First, the people participating in the workshop were exceptional.  The instructors were great and the weather was just right.  It was pretty magical.  You will see a lot of photos over the coming days from this trip.  Today’s image was a self portrait made inside the Bean.  Kind of sur-real but pretty cool too. You can see more of the fun we had at this workshop at the PODAS BLOG – Click Here.

Chicago Sky On Fire

Chicago at sunset

I am in Chicago until Tuesday hosting a photography workshop on Architecture Photography.  We have been having a blast shooting some beautiful sights and buildings.  You can follow our adventures at THE PODAS BLOG.  This was shot done two nights ago.  We had a magic twenty minutes where everything just lit up and the sun did wild things.  This was made with the iphone and then finished off in the iPad.  Didn’t do much except add a frame.  It was just one of those magical moments.  I have so many good images from this trip.  We did some dawn and sunset shots of the Chicago skyline as well as a number of very cool images.  I’ll post more as I can over the coming weeks.

Rope In My Eye

Rope In The Eye - Copenhagen, Denmark

Sometimes simple works.  When I am out shooting I look at things with a frame around them.  Isolate and find the strength in the design and composition.  This was shot in Denmark along the Nyhvn Cananl.  There are always great shots to be had here.  Overall big wide shots and sometimes close shots like this.  This was shot on a Canon 5dII and then I messed with it a bit on the iPad in Snapseed.  All a lot of fun.

I leave today for Chicago to lead another PODAS workshop.  This one will be on Architectural photography.  Be sure to check it out at www.podas.info the PODAS Blog.

Full Sail

Full Sails - San Diego, CA

Today I was searching my images and came up with this image shot in San Diego.  The original was full color beautiful light and was a great example of good composition and exposure.  But it was a little to normal.  I shook it up by playing with it on my iPad using an app – Snapseed.  Here is the result.  Something that slows you down a bit and makes you look.

Big Iceberg

Big Iceberg and Bird, Antarctica

It has been a hot week in China and thought that today I would cool things off a bit.  One thing that I marvel at is icebergs.  There are all sorts of different bergs out there.  This one is a tabular berg and could measure three quarters of a mile wide and deep.  There are some that are much bigger.  This one was caught with the bird that adds foreground and makes the shot work.

Now In Hong Kong

Hong Kong Harbor at Sunrise

Wow…what a trip this has been.  A few weeks ago I was in Ireland.  This last 10 days I have visited 4 cities in China.  Now I am in Hong Kong to do my last presentation tonight.  I hear we have 150 people registered.  Should be fun.  The photographers in China are very passionate and take their photography seriously.  We have been promoting a photography workshop (PODAS) for the China market to be held in Death Valley this November.  Should be a great time.  Tomorrow I fly home, hopefully with an upgrade to business class.  I arrived in Hong Kong after a very civilized train ride for two hours from China.  I awoke this morning to the sunrise picture above.  Sorry, it was shot on the iPhone and may not be the best.  The weather is still 100 plus degrees.  Can’t wait to get back to a more moderate 87 degrees.  I get back with just a few recovery days before starting the PODAS Chicago workshop next week. This will be a workshop focused on Architectural photography.  Should be fun.  I’ll post again when I get home this weekend.
