Your Carriage Awaits

Your Carriage Awaits

Near Saugutuck, Michigan there a cool antique store called Sunrise Junque.  I have been going there for years and will soon make a book from this interesting place.  Here’s a shot from a few years ago.  I think they go and buy old amusement park things as well as tons of other stuff.  They spread it all out and it is a photographers dream to shoot there.  Not to mention I have come home with some cool stuff over the years.

Everyone Loves Penguins

Busy Penguin

Today is the start of a great Sunday.  Going out shooting somewhere today.  This is the kind of day I just load my Jeep Cherokee with a tripod and cameras and start driving.  what will I find?  Where will I go?  Who knows.  As far as the picture for the day, well it is a penguin.  I came across this one when updating the new iPad.  Though it would be fun.  I have hundreds of penguin shots and I love them.  These little guys are always busy and seem to have a  mission.  This guy was off and running somewhere, totally focused on his mission.

Old Boat and Penguins

Whaling boat - Antarctica

On one of our landings in Antarctica we came across this old abandoned and falling apart boat and there were a few penguins next to it.  I shot quickly as the penguins were busy and had someplace to go.  I saw this image in my library the other day and decide i liked it but I should do something to give it an old look.  Using SnapSeed on the MAc I did some adjustments to get to this. Now the image kind of goes with the boat and the whole feel of being old and abandoned.

Making It Look Different

Chicago Pigeons - Sketcher

One of the things photographers are doing  lot of these days is taking normal pictures and using apps on their iPhones and iPads making them look different.  I will admit I am guilty of this too, but I believe an image needs to be able to work without a lot of special effects and textures and so forth.  Granted there is an occasional image that works well but a good image with good subject, and composition will always win out.  Plus after a while all of this fancy effects becomes contrived and overused.  Today though I am showing an image that I ran through a new app on my MAC.  It was 99 cents and it is called Photo Sketcher and it does some cool stuff.  Above is the page from it and below is the original.  The original is  stung in its own right but the sketcher one works well too.  What do you think?

London – Low Angle

It's London

I love London, but I love copenhagen, Barcelona and many more cities also.  This shot was made in a small place where there are these array of small fountains.  I played here for a while trying slow shutter speeds, longer lenses etc until I came up with this shot which I really like.  So today here is LOndon Bridge and fountains.

Jagged Ice

Jagged Ice, Iceland

This shot was made in Iceland at the Glacier Lagoon.  I used a long lens on my 5dII to shoot elements of the ice.  Tight shots of ice using the telephoto to compress the perspective together.  It was amazing what you saw as a frame when doing this vs. what the overall scene looked like.  I enjoy using the camera frame to isolate images.  I do this both with the telephoto lens and macro lens doing close ups.

Heavy Metal

TRain Restoration, Noblesville, IN

Close by to where I live there is a transportation museum.  This museum is mainly focused on trains.  There are a lot there.  Most of them rusty and falling apart.  I just love that.  They do a fair amount of restoration on these trains and have a special building just for that.  It is fun to shoot there and catch restorations in progress which is what this shot is all about.  Made with a Canon 5dII in multi expose mode then using an HDR program I made it the gritty look.  Then on the iPad using SnapSeed I worked on focus and some selective color to come out with this image.

Time For Some Rust Again

Steam Engine Restoration, Indiana

So many images.  I now have quite a library stacking up for the daily blog here.  Thought I would change it up today and put some rust back into the blog.  Close by where I live  there is a transpiration museum and the place has a ton of old train cars in various rates of disrepair and well as restoration and completed cars that are restored.  I love wandering this place and also visiting the train shop where the work is done.  This is shot is of an old locomotive that is being restored. I have kind of enhanced it a bit and made it somewhat vintage looking to add to the overall feel.

Lonely Fisherman

Newfoundland Fisherman

I love this shot.  This was done off the coast of Newfoundland while out whale watching.  We saw this guy in his dory like fishing boat and it just looked so cool.  I shot a number of images of this.  It was funny because we were not finding whales and we motored up this guy and he pointed in a direction and sure enough we found the whales where he pointed.  He was a crusty rough looking fellow.

Also, The blog may have fewer posts over the next three weeks.  I fly out to Austrailia tonight and then by this weekend to New Zealand to run a PODAS workshop there.  I’l post when I can.  www.podas.info if you’d like to follow the workshop.
