Hurricane Ridge Weathered Tree

Weathered Tree - Olympic National Park

I keep coming back to Olympic National Park.  Have done a number of trips there and I will be leading a workshop there this fall.  While most people see this ridge called Hurricane Ridge from the parking lot, I decided to see a ridge I saw off in the distance and thus traveled a very rough road out to a farther ridge.  along the way on the top of the ridge were testaments to the battle trees fight to make their stance on this ridge.  There are small hearty evergreens with deep roots and then there are the ones like in this photo that fought the battle and lost.  Now they are at the mercy of the winds and nature and while dead take on a whole new look as natures wears them down.

A Different View

New York City, Apple Store

There is no hiding it, I am an Apple fan.  I love their products, have Apple stock (bought a number of years ago YES!), and I love their stores.  It’s an amazing sight to see when visiting a mall or other location and to see an Apple Store.  There are always a crowd of people in these stores.  There are no cash registers, You can touch and play with any product you like and there are some real helpful people to answer questions.  What is really great though is the bold architecture, especially at their super stores.  the design is gorgeous with lots of glass and chrome.  This shot was done at the New York store looking up under the glass staircase into the glass cube.  The color shot os nice but for some reason I thought this B&W shot works best.

Old Boat and Penguins

Whaling boat - Antarctica

On one of our landings in Antarctica we came across this old abandoned and falling apart boat and there were a few penguins next to it.  I shot quickly as the penguins were busy and had someplace to go.  I saw this image in my library the other day and decide i liked it but I should do something to give it an old look.  Using SnapSeed on the MAc I did some adjustments to get to this. Now the image kind of goes with the boat and the whole feel of being old and abandoned.

Fun With The iPhone

Performing Arts Center, Carmel, IN

This image was shot yesterday.  The building is the Carmel (indiana) Perform Arts Center or Palladium as it is known.  It’s a big new building that is quite nice and very expensive.  None the less I have fun shooting it.  On the way back from the store I pulled in and did a quick pano with my iPhone.  Assembled it and like magic with PhotoStream it was on my iPad.  I then worked the image a bit in a couple of apps to come up with this.  Just a fun day and a bit of fun time messing around.

Machine #1

Some Kind Of Machine - Gravel Pit, Indiana

A few weeks ago I spent a few hours ay a local gravel pit right before a thunderstorm .   The light was beautiful and there was all sort of things to shoot.  This shot was originally made on a GH2.  I imported the photo into the iPad and worked on in SnapSeed a great app to manipulate images.  I wanted to portray a kind of scaryy, abandoned what is this machine look.  I also cropped it tight and almost square.  I added some tonality to it also.  So, What is IT?

Debra On A Truck

Debra On The Truck - Gravel Pits, Indiana

A week or so ago Debra, my shooting partner and friend called and said let’s go shoot.  It was a warm day (and I don’t move fast on warm days) and I said slowly OK.  I knew I needed to go out and do some shooting.  It’s great therapy especially when you need to clear the mind.  It was also one of those evenings where it looked like a storm could blow in any minute.  So, we headed off and we had no place in particular in mind to go.  Then I remembered a place my son and I stumbled upon a few years ago and using my iPad with satellite view I located the gravel pit and we headed there.  The gates were open so we went in and we spent nearly two hours there shooting Debra went her way and I went mine.  At one point when I was coming back from the dredging area Debra was  standing on this old dump truck.  So, I said pose and as Debra always does she struck a few unusual poses.  I love this one as it just works on so many levels.  I shot it with my iPhone, even though I had my big boy camera with me.  I wanted to use the ProHDR app to capture the details in the sky and not lose detail in Debra.  Damn, it worked great.  I then took the image into my iPad and played even more adding border, grain, more dramatic light effects etc.. Man, this si so much fun. So, here it is.  I think it is one cool, bad ass shot!

Cool Horse

Icelandic Horse...Damn cool!

Icelandic horses are some of the toughest and nicest horses in the world.  They just have life all figured out.  Strong and sturdy yet sort of small.  They have these long manes that just blow in the wind and great strong eyes that penetrate you and catch you.  They remind me of rock stars, long hair blowing in the wind and they just know they are bad ass.  I shot this in color on a Phase One P65+ then turned it into BW on the iPad.

Stairs

Circular Stairway, HIlton - Reykjavik, Iceland

I love circular staircases.  The perspective and how they fade away and repeat patterns has always intrigued me.  Today’s shot was made at the Hilton in Iceland.  I was sitting in the bar and there was this giant staircase that was more or less a circular one.  I played with a number of shots and settled on this one. Enhanced it a bit on my iPad.

Death Valley – Storm Coming

Death Valley Storm Coming

One thing I love about photographing in the west is the wide open – big sky feel that you get.  You can see so far and so high and you get a perspective that you can’t get when you live with obscured horizons and trees everywhere.  This was shot in Death Valley on the road to Beatty.
