Whale Tail

Whale tail in Antarctica

I have photographed a lot of whales over the years.  One of the coolest things to see is a humpback whale when it dives as its tail comes out of the water for a few seconds and when it does water flows off of it.  This shot I like because of the colors from the setting sun.  It adds color and texture in the reflections of the water.

Greenland Immensity

I was going through the images from my trip last August and came across this one.  I like this image as it really sums a lot up about Greenland.  Large rock walls, icebergs and bits of humanity.  The sailboat and iceberg against the solid towering rock walls makes a great shot.  I printed this image to 17×22 inches and will be hanging it in my office.

Greenland Green Ice

I have been photographing lots of icebergs for the last 12 years and never have I seen an iceberg that looks like this.  We were miles away and saw this green and blue iceberg and asked the captain to drive us towards it.  He obliged and I was able to shoot a ton of images of this beast.  I used the Sony a9 and 100-400mm G Master lens to catch both the whole iceberg and close=ups.  I worked to find the picture in the picture.  The abstract of this ice was just beautiful.

I’m Back From Greenland

Wow, what a trip.  I’m now home from Greenland.  I leave again on Monday for another trip but today I wanted to post some photos from our first day of the trip.  Before we left Svalbard we had a day to explore.  I photographed Walrus and Arctic Fox.  These images are just two from an amazing session shooting these fox.  There were five of them and one caught a bird and took off from the others.  These little guys are amazingly fast.  I shot these with the new Sony a9 and 100-400mm GM lens. Auto-focus was amazing and I set the camera on manual at 1000th sec.  the ISO was set on auto.  This method allowed me to freeze action and allowed the ISO to vary for the light.

Saturday Night At The Fair

Shot at 1250th of a sec, ISO 2000 with 400mm on 100-400mm lens F/8

Debra and I went to the Indiana State Fair on Friday night. It’s a yearly tradition to spend a day at the fair and we watched the weather forecast and headed to the fair on a partly cloudy day with 80-degree weather.  There’s a lot of walking at the fair and we both were loaded with our camera gear.  Debra was shooting with a Fuji XT2 with 10-24mm, 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens.  I was shooting with the new Sony a9 with the 16-35mm and 100-400 G Master lenses.

I’m taking the Sony setup to Greenland later this week and Debra has never shot with the Fuji before so it was a good chance for her to get familiar with it.  Needless to say, we had a great day and shot lots of images.

We took a break to sit down and watch the monster truck show.  There was some motocross as part of it.  The Sony a9 has the ability to shootm20 frames per second and the 100-400mm lens is so fast focusing that with this combo it was hard to miss a shot.  So, this image is one of the hundreds and most likely I’ll post more that I did during the show.  I was blown away by it.  the sun was setting so we had warm light coming from behind lighting things perfectly.  You gotta admit that it is nice when everything just comes together.
