While my friend Steve Gosling and I toured the Isle Of Skye area in Scotland we came upon a small visiting pier and village. we both went off in different directions. This one shot I made of a boat on the beck. It looked best cropped square (thanks Steve). Shot with an Olympus OMD 5.
So, as you can see I have been working on my Scotland images this past week. I’ll be doing another trip to Scotland in the fall of 2014 to lead a workshop to Skye. This was actually shot in Scotland and is of a side of a fishing shack that my friend Steve Gosling and I stumbled upon. There was peeling paint, moss, and rust. All the ingredients that I need to satisfy my photographic desires. Sometimes something simple like this just works.
Well I am off on another adventure. This time I’ll be starting in Salvbard, Norway and shooting landscapes, wildlife and hopefully Polar Bears.
This adventure Starts on August 22nd and I’ll be back home September 5th. For the most part I’ll be out of Internet coverage and cell phone coverage, Most likely I’ll have email, cell phone withdrawal issues and hopefully this can be treated with some good therapy on board the shipI’ll be on. I should come back with lots of good photos. A few days after my return I head to the italian side of the Swiss Alps for the Dolomites PODAS workshop. Should have internet there though so I should be able to post images.

On my trip to Scotland a year ago I shot many great landscapes. I also with my friend Steve Gosling found a fisherman’s storage shed. It was a work of art and we spent a lot of time shooting it. This was from the side of building and is kind of an abstract of one of my favorite subjects RUST. You’ll see more from this series soon.
It’s kind of a touristy trap place, but if you can get the people out of the picture it is a beautiful castle to take a picture of. Seems Scotland just has an abundance of castles This one is exceptional and built on an island like so many other Scottish castles. I have more of this castle and others I’ll be publishing over the coming weeks. This was made with the Olympus OMD 5.
This ship is no longer in Saugatuck where the image was taken. It was a landmark there for a long time. A year ago the ship was moved to a new loaction where it will be restored and opened as a museum. I have always had fun shooting this boat and have a lot of good images of it. This one I like because of the symmetry and the way the light plays on the hull.
This is a controversial image made in San Miguel, Mexico. It’s not uncommon there to find women begging on the street like this. It’s hard to take and see. The image has gotten criticism because some people thought I was exploiting the woman or not showing repeat. My answer is as a photographer I document things. Good and bad and try to tell a story. This picture tells a thousand stories and say a lot. The face makes the shot. WHat kind of stories could she tell us? What is her story? If the picture makes you stop and think, then mission accomplished.
When I shoot somewhere I always try to se things different and avoid trying to shoot postcard type images. This is a classic landscape image. It includes a good foreground, sunset and a beautiful landscape. This was made in Monument VAlley and shot with a Phase One IQ180 at sunset. Gotta love the dynamic range.
One of the major attraction in Iceland is Gullfoss which is a large really cool waterfall. Typically when I travel and photograph in Iceland I like to go where others don’t go or at least try to see the place and image differently. well Gullfoos is no different. Buses of tourist show up here and most of the time we avoid this place like the plague. But, we had sometime and decided to at least stop and admire this cool place. I decided to try and shoot it differently . I used my Olympus OMD5 and did a series of bracketed exposures and then worked them in post processing. I ended up with a different kind of prehistoric gritty look. Works for me.
This is a very cool arch on the norther shores in Iceland. Called Hellnar Lava Arch.
