While visiting one of my more favorite places – Saugutuck Michigan, I make a trek to the Sunrise Junqe store. This is an mazing place to visit and I have been going to this place for years. It is off the Blue Star highway south of Saugutuck. It is set up so it is like an adventure in antiques and junk. A photographers paradise to say the least. I now have enough images to start a book on this place. This image is just a close up shot like the springs from yesterday. I messed with it a bit on the iPad to come up with this feel. Lots more from this place and I’ll post more over time.

Springs
I like photographing all sort of things. This shot was made in Alaska at a train yard I had stumbled upon. I like the design and industrial feel of the image. I like ti isolate parts of things to see if I can make them look good. That is what I did here of springs on a rail car.
Stairs Mexico
While visiting San Miguel, Mexico I had the opportunity to visit a giant hotel that was under construction. Then one day they realized they were building this hotel right below a dam and if the dam broke the hotel would be wiped out. So, they stopped building the hotel. Thus her is this abandoned hotel just sitting there. My friend Michael and I explored this hotel and i found a number of cool shots. This one is clued stairs. I love the angles of the stairs and how the angles of steel (red) make the image.
Slot Canyon
Everyone has photos of Antelope Canyon, Page, AZ. I wanted to try to make mine different. These slot canyons are all over the place in the Southwest but Antelope is one of the more famous. Quite an experience to visit. Hard to photograph because of the tourists and it is very dark. I used a P45+ from Phase One and some of my exposures were over 10 minutes long. Patience is needed to shoot successfully and what you see in the picture is not necessarily what you see in the viewfinder. This is one of the most see places.
Cool Horse
Icelandic horses are some of the toughest and nicest horses in the world. They just have life all figured out. Strong and sturdy yet sort of small. They have these long manes that just blow in the wind and great strong eyes that penetrate you and catch you. They remind me of rock stars, long hair blowing in the wind and they just know they are bad ass. I shot this in color on a Phase One P65+ then turned it into BW on the iPad.
Blue Anchor
I was out shooting ships in Copenhagen and came across this blue boat with a blue anchor. The original didn’t look all that great kind of flat so as I do with a lot of my shots, I played with it coming up wit this image above. Just a simple picture.
Icelandic Hot Spring
Todays image was done in Iceland. My guide Daniel Bergman and I went for a drive to some place way out in the middle of no where. There was this huge area of geothermal springs. Bubbling holes in the ground with steam and hot water. Really hot water. Some holes were smaller like this one. wonderful colors were surrounding these prints caused by minerals rising out of the ground. I have some great shots of this area.
Whale Tale
Every one takes them and I have tons of them. Each whale tale is special. It’s an amazing thing to see in person just as a breach is or even when they become very friendly and come within feet of you and poke their heads out of the water. I love whales and I am amazed and puzzled by them. This shot was made in Antarctica where I have had some of my best whaling shots. I played with contrast and a few other things to boost the impact of this image.
Peeling Paint
I have always been intrigued by decay, rust and peeling paint. I see these things as work of art especially when you isolate them and move in close. This shot is of peeling paint that was coming off in large pieces. It had dimension, texture and it makes you stop and look. I worked this image on the iPad using Snapspeed.
Messed Up Train
Time to change from B&W images to some wow color. Today’s image was made on some abandoned trains not to far from where I live. I have been shooting these for several years now. They are parked on a siding off the road and pretty well hidden and they deteriorate further on every trip I make there. Actually pretty creepy. You are missing the smell that goes along with these images. To shoot this properly I had to shoot three exposures and HDR them together. Then I took them into iPad and used Snapseeed and PhotoForge to make the final image. Kind of surreal, which it is.
