Snow Fences

Snow Fences in Hoakkaido

I was in Japan in February running a workshop on the Island of Hokkaido.  This is an amazing and stunning location. We decided to drive north on the east side of the island until we couldn’t go any further.  The mission was to find the fox, but there was none to be found.  Instead, we found these avalanche fences on the hillsides in fresh snow.  The patterns and a very monochromatic landscape pushed me to think BW, and that is what I used in making my series on Snow Fences.  Here is one of the images. Big Pipes

Inside the Buffalo Water Works

I love industrial; landscapes.  It’s just one more way to stretch my creativity and way of seeing.  So many photographers limit themselves to one specialty, and while that is fine, in my mind, it promotes the lack of seeing.  It doesn’t allow someone to get out of the woods and see the trees.  I enjoy mixing it up.  Every time I do I come back to thinks I like better not only refreshed but with a new vision.  These industrial landscapes are an example.  You need to see different to find good composition and lighting.  This was made at the Buffalo, NY waterworks.

They Are So Cute – Arctic Fox

An Arctic Fox in Svalbard

I love Svalbard which is a part of Norway and some of the most northern Islands in the world.  I travel to Svalbard at least once a year.  One of the highlights is photographing, and I look for two particular animal types.  Polar Bears and Arctic Foxes.  Here’s an Arctica Fox shot on a trip about a year ago.  They have a coat that changes from dark to white once a year.  They also don’t have a very long life; thus they tend to get the most out of their time on earth.  Adorable creatures.

Penguin Highways In Antarctica

One of the great things about visiting Antarctica is seeing all the wildlife.  It’s hard to believe all the wildlife that lives in such a hostile environment.  And, of course, one of those creatures are penguins. Who doesn’t like a penguin?  This shot was made from a zodiac looking at a beach where penguins were coming out of the surf and climbing a hill to their rookery.  Penguins follow the same paths much time making what is called Penguin Highways.  I like the whole abstract feel and look.

Crop Dusting In The Palouse

One of the cool things about the Palouse is you just don’t know what you will find around the next corner.  One day while shooting on our workshop we turned a bend in the road and we saw this crop duster do amazing low flights over fields of wheat.  So, naturally we stopped and took photos.  This is one of them.

I Am A Walrus

I will be doing Svalabrd Photo Tours for 2020 and 2021.  These are amazing trips and you get to see beautiful polar region scenes but more than anything else expereince majestic wildlife.  You’ll see birds, whales, Polar Bears and Walrus like I have shown here.

Industrial Symmetry

I love shooting rust and industrial landscapes.  It breaks up the routine of shooting nature and allows me a set of fresh eyes on different types of subjects.  This image and tomorrows image was made in Silo City in Buffalo.  This one location has provided me with an extraordinary amount of photographic opportunities. What I try to do in situations like this is to find symmetry and balance in the industrial components and then play with the light to take the image even further.  I decided that black and white worked best for these.
