Lofoten Begins

I just returned from nearly two weeks in Lofoten, Norway.  It was an interesting trip.  I was an instructor along with Art Wolfe and Ignacio Palacios with 18 photographers.  The weather was challenging and even more challenging were all the other photographers.  I am really re-thinking how I do my workshops in the future as there are so many photographers offering workshops these days and all of them are going to the same places.  I am asking myself why.  I used to have a spot to myself and now there can literally be 50 plus photographers all trying to get to one position.  Add on to that the boom in Asian tourists who have no clue and walk right into the shots and it’s not getting to be any fun anymore.  In any case, I walked away with a series of images that are different than most and then again like the image above iconic like everyone else.  So over the coming days look for more Lofoten images.

Atacama

I discovered a new place in April of 2016 while running a workshop with Art Wolfe and Ignacio Palacios.  In northern Chile on the border with Bolivia, there is a region of great beauty called the Atacama.  It’s got some incredible landscapes and great skies.  We photographed both in Chile and Bolivia, sometimes at altitudes of 16,000 feet.  This is one from the series of images I made.  More to come.

Jewels On The Beach

I am leading a workshop to Iceland in March.  It’s the best time of year to visit Iceland.  No tourists and you can see Iceland the way if should be seen.  This photo of an iceberg on a beach is only a sample of what you would encounter.  If interested click on the link here or contact me for more details. This was a short time exposure so the waves could blur just a little and capture the water as it runs off the shore.  This is one of many beautiful images I shot on that beach this one day.

Ice Cave Ceiling

FB_DSC0185-613-clrtyOne of our highlights on the Iceland trip was visiting an Ice Cave.  Not only was the experience of getting to the cave fun but the cave was pretty cool too.  We had to use big four-wheeled drive vehicles to get these and then once there get into all sort of gear.  The light inside was all blue as the ice filters away all other light,  So, here is a photo of the ice cave ceiling and one of me looking like I am straight out of the Blue Man Group.

Back From Iceland

Icebergs on the beach. They just glowed. We hot the beach at the right time with the right light. What you don't see is the gaggle of Chinese tourists that I had to work around to get this shot.

You may have noticed I have been absent from any recent posts.  This was due to leading a workshop in Iceland for Luminous-Landscape.  We had a great workshop and we saw and did some amazing things.  It was quite the adventure for sure.  We had everything Iceland could throw at us weather wise.  From cold and high winds to beautiful mild winter weather with perfect clouds. So, to get things caught up I will share a number of images I had posted on Facebook during the trip.  My camera for this trip was the Sony A7rII as well as my iPhone.   I had fun using both and you’ll see images made with each.  These images are just a drop in the bucket of some beautiful images I have come home with.  More will be coming.  I am leading another Iceland workshop in June.  And in a few weeks will head off to Patigonia and the Altiplano for two back to back workshops.  So, expect lots of images.

Stockiness, one of my favorites places. I have a number of different and dramatic shots made here over the years.

The Crump

FB_DSC1920-columbuse--2-grump-nik_tonemappedOn some Sundays Debra and I get in the car and go somewhere.  On one particular Sunday we headed to Columbus, IN because this small city has some amazing architecture.  We did a good day of shooting there and as alway had a  good time.  This image was of an old theater entrance in town called the Crump.  Did many images of this building and it has all sort of potential for interesting images.  During my morning coffee I decided to mess with color and texture.  This is one of the results.  Shot with the Sony a7r II.

Bringing In The Wheat

Harvest In The Palouse
Harvest In The Palouse

The Palouse is one of my favorite places to photograph.  If you are a regular to my blog you know I have many images made there.  I love the harvest time which usually takes place in early August.  This past year it was very dry and the harvest came very early.  The Palouse suffered a very hot summer and thus it was dry and dusty.  This image show the harvest and the dry dusty wind.
