Penguins . . .

Penguins on a mission - Antarctica

Penguins, boy do I have penguins. At one time I honestly could say I had the highest resolution penguin images in the world as I shot this image and many others with the only P65+ at the time to visit Antarctica. These are amazing creatures and over the year and my three visits to Antarctica I have amassed a large library of penguin images. This is a fun shot as three penguins march forward and seem to be on a mission. These are very busy creatures. They always have something to do and they seem focused on getting the task done.  This was shot with a P65+ and 75-150mm lens. The detail in this image is amazing as you can zoom in and see the crystals in the snow. I’ll publish more penguin images over time.

One Of My Favorites

Boy On Street, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Merry Christmas . . . Hope you and your families are enjoying a great day.  I am having a good time in Florida with my family. This is one of my favorite images. It encompasses al the things I like about photography – color, geometry, placement of subject and mood. It was photographed on the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina. I enjoy street photography as we know it in the photography world and I’ll share a lot of my street photography as we move forward. This was shot with a Canon 5dII with a 70-300 DF lens. The advantage of this lens is it has a good zoom ratio but is compact. Makes catching a shot like this easy.

Beauty In Ice

Iceberg Off of Peterman Island, AntarcticaI have had the opportunity to visit Antarctica three times. I am amazed by icebergs. They are here today and gone tomorrow. Chance are pretty good that the images I take of these beauties are the only ones there are. Every iceberg is different and I’ll post more over time so you can see. Today’s image is a shot of an iceberg close-up. I love the whole vein looking thing going on here. It’s almost like a painting but so complex. And, the color – where does nature come up with such pretty blues.

Statue Of Liberty

New York, New York - Statue Of Liberty

Okay, there is this technique called HDR – High Dynamic Range imaging and it can be cool but overdone.  But it is fun.  This is a shot from a series I did in Las Vegas using HDR techniques. It is obvious what it is and it photography with a Canon 5dII at New York, NY Hotel. Then I messed with it doing HDR and then once it was in my gallery on the iPhone I played with it some more to make this shot. It’s all about having fun using the tools a photographer has today.

Road Trip

Rusted Train Car and Plant

I am on a holiday road trip to Florida to visit with family. Always good to get together for the holiday. After being cooped up on airplanes so much the last few weeks (a round trip to Australia can pretty much guarantee you’ll want a break from planes), I decided to drive. I also decided that I will make a photo essay during the trip on Waffle Houses, the famous road side restaurant at almost every interchange. I have visited four Waffle Houses so far. I’ll assemble a small essay when I get home. Quite a slice of America.

Today’s images is a fun one. I like photographing rust and decay and how nature seems to re-claim it. This image was taken of the side of a rusted out train car (box car) and in the rust this plant had started to grow. I shot this with a Phase One P65+ and it was in one of my albums on the iPhone. I then used Picture Show and did a mirror effect of the image and the above image is what I got. I like symmetry and you’ll see more images like this over time.

A Little Infrared Fun

Parkes Radio Telescope - Australia

While on my trip to Australia I had the unique opportunity to travel across Australia on a multi-day road trip back to Sydney from the outback.  Along the way my traveling buddy (mate as they say in Oz) stopped in at a place called Parkes.  This is the location of a giant radio telescope.  This was featured in a movie a while back called “The Dish”.  We thought it offered some cool photo opps.  So we took the Phase One Achromatic+ back (a 39 megapixel) BW digital back and using special filters and photographed the dish using infrared.  This is a fun way to shoot as you are shooting reflected energy and not light.  Hard to explain but the effects especially in landscape photography is pretty cool.  Hope you feel the same way.  To learn more about this cool digital back… click here.

Funky Saturday

Funky Sunset - Olympic National Park, WA

I thought I’d put something different up today.  Just that kind of the mood I am in.  This is a landscape done on a beach near Olympic National Park.  It was shot with a Phase One P65+ and then worked as an HDR from one exposure.  The Phase One camera gives you close to 15 stops dynamic range so I was able to under and over process by two stops with ease.  Brought the images together in PhotoMatix and at that point the image looked very nice.  As a matter of fact I have some large size wall shots that look great.  I had the images in my iphone gallery and was on the plane ride back from Australia and was messing with images in Picture Show app and this one came out.  So, here it is.

Picture For A Cold Morning

The Gullet

Another cold morning here in Indiana.  Never thought I’d say this but thinking for of being a snowbird more everyday.  The last few days have been catch up days after returning from Australia.  So much to do.  I leave again on Monday for a road trip to FL for the holidays.  Will be nice to see family and kick back a bit.  This image was shot in Antarctica on one of my three trips there.  Lovely place and this was one of those magic shots.  There are tons of Antarctica images so you’ll see more.  This was taken in a place called the Gullet that not too many people get to visit.  It was one of those life changing days.  And, a lot warmer than it is here today.

Back To Boats

Boat Deck Seattle, WA

A few days ago I posted a photo done on a small boat.  From the same series I post this image.  The image was shot with a 5dII and then imported into my iPhone gallery.  Then one evening I was messing around with a new app (they are so addicting) and the end result is what you see here.  Light, shadow, angles and textures all work.  Hope you enjoy it.
