New Tree – ONP

I am getting excited about the possibilities for a workshop in Olympic National Park (ONP). Even though is has been a lousy few days of weather, I managed to get some shots in today. You’ll see some more in the coming days. I plan on doing a PODAS workshop in ONP this fall – early September. I’ll keep you posted on when. This tree was in a meadow near Lake Quinault. It works because the mountains in the background were cloud covered and the light was just a lovely diffused light. I shot some cool waterfall images too.

On The Way To Olympic National Park

It has been a rainy free days in Seattle. Typical. So, early Saturday morning I am in line to catch a ferry to Bainbridge Island and start my two day trip through ONP. I see the fireboat and ferry coming in with the pink in the clouds, hinting at sin some sun. Bam, got the shot. Color, composition, everything just worked for that one moment. The ONP is going to make a great location for an upcoming PODAS workshop this fall. Hard to take any photos yesterday as it rained the whole time and I mean heavy rain. I am about to head out the door with the Phase One IQ180 and ALPA set up and hopefully today get some decent images. Let’s see what I come back with.

Wheels Of Rust

Yesterday I had a number of meetings and afterwards I found myself in Snowqualmie, a small town 30 mini yes outside of Seattle. I usually photograph this magnificent waterfall there, but the government was redoing the damn and power plant there so there was no access. None the less I found a yard fill of old trains. It’s raining and not too pleasant, so I did not shoot with my big boy cameras. I got my iPhone out and started to look for rust and design. I found it. This is one of hundreds I shot. I like the whole iron feel if it. It had rust another favorite subject of mine .  I messed with it a little in some apps to give an old kind of feel and thus this is my image of the day.

Old Train

Sometimes I find myself coming back to my rust and decay images as I found my self this morning. I am in Seattle for a few days then move over to Olympic National Park this weekend where I will be scouting out locations for an upcoming PODAS Photo workshop. I love ONP and there are so many cool places to shoot.  Challenge is timing from one spot to another and time to shoot when there. I will end up having to move around 2-30 people and the logitics are tough, but I am good at that.

Today’s picture is the rusting and decaying interior of an old Pullman car sitting off a railroad siding abandoned and decaying away. I love the texture, colors and the general state of what it is today and what it might have been yesterday.  Shot in Noblesville, IN of all places.

Zion Offers So Much

Zion National PArk

Zion National Park, a short drive (sort of) from LasVegas is such a wonderful place to visit.  I usually go in the fall, winter and spring.  At these times you can drive in the park.  During the summer you must take a bus.  There are many good walk and vistas.  One part of the park is a valley with large canyon walls and very pretty and another part is carved sandstone and almost desert like.  A must see trip.  This image was made right after you go through the tunnel from the valley part.  Park the car and take a hike.  Lots of great shots like this are available.

Another Angle

Since I did something man-made and architectural yesterday, I thought I would do the same today.  welcome to the London Bridge and another angle of it.  This is a fun bridge to shoot.  IT has so many possibilities and is such a dominant icon of the London Landscape.  Getting close and looking up always gives a new perspective.

Always Fun – The Bean

Chicago is a fun city.  There is always something to shoot.  The challenge is shooting things that everyone else is shooting differently.  So, every time I go to Chicago I play and shoot and especially have fun shooting the Bean which is a highly polished sculpture.  It is highly reflective, seamless and just plain fun to shoot.  This is one of my attempts and I think it works.  If you are a regular follower you have seen other bean images and most likely in the future you’ll see even more on my blog.

Lonely Seal

Lonely seal and storm, Antarctica

Imagine if you will what the life of the seal in this picture’s life is like. Living in Antarctica, looney, cold, unpredictable and something always trying to eat you.  This shot was made on one of my trips to this amazing continent.  It shows pretty well what Antarctica is all about.  Giant, lonely and ever changing.  This was made on the way to an area called the Gullet.  We went through an ice flow and there this seal was with a storm in the background.  I just love it.

Antarctica Sunrise or Sunset

Antarctica Sunrise & Sunset - It was all the same

Antarctica offers a an environment of great photographs.  Dynamic, changing and never cliched.  You can be on shore or the deck of the ship and see and shoot just beautiful images.  This one was made one morning when I was on the deck all by myself.  And, I was presented with this shot of clouds, distant icebergs and the rising sun peeking through cracks in the sky.  Makes for some dynamic photos.  It then got darker and an hour later it was blue skies.  Things happen fast there and they are unpredictable.
