The Palouse

The Palouse

Tucked away in the Southeast corner of Washington is an area known as the Palouse.  It is roughly a three country region of the most fertile soil in america.  It’s also a photographers paradise.  Gently rolling hills, big skies, farmland, plowed fields as far as the eye can see.  Throw in old barns, lonely trees and abandoned properties and you have a place that a photographer loves.  I am leading a PODAS Photography Workshop in the region for the next week.  There are 28 attendees and with staff and wives I am guiding 40 people.  I have a team of great instructors and staff.  I’ll try to post an new image from the thrip each day.  Here is an image then on a trip in the spring.  You can also follow this trip in more detail BY CLICKING HERE.

Antarctica Whaling Station

Antarctica Whaling Station, Deception Island

At one time whaling was huge industry in the Antarctica region.  Dotted across the region are old whaling stations, long abandoned where ships would bring whales that were caught, drag them ashore, butcher them and process them.  Stories of bays turning red because of all the blood abound.  Now all that’s left are rusty tanks, pumps, boilers and old building that barely stand.  Of course this is my kind of place liking decay and rust as much as I do.  Today’s image is a shot (one of hundreds) of a whaling station on Deception Island along the Antarctica Peninsula.

Cool Horse

Icelandic Horse...Damn cool!

Icelandic horses are some of the toughest and nicest horses in the world.  They just have life all figured out.  Strong and sturdy yet sort of small.  They have these long manes that just blow in the wind and great strong eyes that penetrate you and catch you.  They remind me of rock stars, long hair blowing in the wind and they just know they are bad ass.  I shot this in color on a Phase One P65+ then turned it into BW on the iPad.

Peeling Paint

Peeling Paint

I have always been intrigued by decay, rust and peeling paint.  I see these things as work of art especially when you isolate them and move in close.  This shot is of peeling paint that was coming off in large pieces.  It had dimension, texture and it makes you stop and look.  I worked this image on the iPad using Snapspeed.

Iceland Iceberg Beach

Icebergs On The Beach - Iceland

In honor of some of my friends who are now touring in Iceland I present one of my Iceland shots – icebergs on the beach.  This beach is truly an amazing place.  Icebergs wash out to sea from  Jokulsarlon Lagoon and then when the tide switches around they wash up on the beach where the crashing waves begin to erode them to these beautiful diamond like Icebergs.  The beach is littered with them for a very long distance.  Quite the site to see and photograph.  It’s different every day.  So to Harry, Teri, Einir and others – have a great time there.

School House On A Bluff

School House On A Bluff, Ireland

The PODAS works shop is now over and oh what a workshop it was.  It was a week of a lot of photography, good classroom sessions and lots of fun and laughs.  It’s great when you can bring fifteen photographers together from all over the world and share a similar passion.  Bidding farewell was bittersweet, but I am sure we all will meet again on a future PODAS workshop.  This photo was made with a Phase One P65+ on an ALPA camera with an extreme wide angle lens (23mm).  It is a another view from the one published the other day.  If you ever get a chance to visit Ireland, you will find a beautiful country with very friendly people.  Put it on your bucket list.

Ireland Is Fantastic

Minard Castle Beach - Ireland

I can’t even begin to tell everything that has happened on this trip to Ireland.  I am having a great time.  The attendees on the PODAS workshop are having a blast and all of us are taking and making great photos.  The image above is a 30 second exposure taken at Minard Castle Beach.  See the Phase One PODAS blog for more details.

On My Way

Well the day has finally come.  By the time you read this I will be on my way to Oregon for my oldest sons wedding  How cool is that.  I am very proud of what he has accomplished.  A dedicated soldier in Army SF he has seen and done more than most of will ever do in a lifetime.  He is marrying one of the nicest person I know and I know they will be very happy.  This will be the first time in many years that my whole family will be together.  My three sons, their mom and lots or relatives.  It should be a great weekend.  To start the weekend off here is another BW image from Moab.  Shot with a Phase One P65+ on an APLA camera.

Chicago – City Of Strong Buildings

Chicago, IL

I love Chicago!  It’s a fun city to visit, easy to get around and offer many attractions, but more than that I love photographing there.  Great architecture no matter where you look.  I am leading a Phase One PODAS workshop in July on architecture photography in Chicago.  It will great to share with the attendees the interesting possibilities on shooting in this great city.  It will be an intense three day workshop and will cover interior and exterior photography, a boat cruise and image manipulation and processing.  We have only one seat left for this workshop.  In any case todays image is one I love taken from a bridge showing the old rivet ironwork and the new stainless steel buildings.
