Old Vegas

Neon Boneyard, Las Vegas

Old Vegas was neon signs and times gone by. A visit to the Neon Boneyard where old Las Vegas signs go when they die is a great experience. Enjoy this image done at the boneyard with a GH2 and a 5 exposure HDR in PhotoMatix.

I am in Long Island, NY for a few days working in the Phase One offices and having meetings. Pouring down rain. Dreary.

Stairs To Where

Stairs To where, South of Endicott, WA

I am home from the Palouse even if it is only one day.  enough time to unpack and re-pack as I head to New York this week.  The trip to the Palouse was very succesful.  I did a lot to prep for the workshop I am leading there this August.  A lot goes into running a  workshop with 30 some odd people.  Hotels, meeting rooms, vans, routes, box lunches, restaurants, timing and so on.  I believe we are set though and this workshop will be fantastic one.

During my trip I drove a lot of back roads because that is all there is out there and came across many an interesting site.  One of these sites was an old Texaco station stuck in the middle of no where.  The old barn with yesterdays image and a lot of abandoned cars and homes.  I’ll post these over the next few weeks.   Tomorrow I’ll post the truck image from yesterday shown at a different angle and manipulated a bit.  I had some time to play with the image while at the airport yesterday.

Todays shot is the front of one of the abandoned houses I found.  Can you tell me a good reason some one would build stairs that go up to the wall of the house?  A lot of what I saw was very surreal.

Arches National Park - Windows

It’s been a good few days of photography.  We have been shooting with the new IQ 180 cameras and they are really something to work with. Features and an interface unlike any other camera. You’ll see more on this soon. This is a shot from Monday morning. Sorry the posts have been delayed, very busy shooting and bad internet connection. This was shot and one of the many arches in Arches National Park. It’s called windows and I shot ti from a number of angles and as the sun came up. On one of these trips you have to be willing to do a lot of early mornings. If you like to sleep then landscape photography might not be you gig.

Bottom Of The world

On The Way to Antarctica - Ushuaia - Argentine

At the very most souterh tip of Argentina is a small and very remote city – Ushuaia. This is the point where you jump to Antarctica from.  It is the southern most tip of the world as we know it.  I spent a week in Ushuaia one day.  Not a lot to do.  So I wandered around and took pictures which something as you know I like to do.  I came upon a small beach with a wrecked boat and another pretty wrecked boat not too far off shore.  So, I shot this shot and a number of close-ups.  I like this one foreground and back ground seem to work well.

Two Hours In Vegas

Neon Boneyard - Las Vegas

I met up with one of the attendees of the PODAS workshop in Vegas today and we went to the Neon Boneyard. It was a hot 100 degree day. Funny as it was in the 30’s when I left Indy. In any case we had a fun time shooting the old neon signs of Vegas. Lots of colors and such. So, I decided to take the color out and make an image that might make you take a second look. Hope it works. I like it.

The Neon Boneyard

Old Neon Sign - The Boneyard

I leave on Friday for a ten day trip to Death Valley.   This is one of the most beautiful National Parks there is.  It’s deceiving because you drive into it and you see just desert, but it has it’s surprises. Before I head out to Death Valley I’ll be stopping in Las Vegas, and picking up a friend from Australia and we are going shooting in the Neon Boneyard.  This is a photographers paradise.  This is where they all the old signs from the hotels and casinos in Vegas.  It is rich in texture and color and just about anyplace you point the camera is a good shot.  I will be shooting with my small GH2 camera and doing 5 exposure HDRs.  I have shot medium format here before and just have some amazing shots.  This time I have ideas of what I want to do with the final images and they will not be big prints.  After this little excursion I”ll be headed to Furnace Creek Inn where I will be leading a Phase One PODAS workshop for a week.  We have folks coming from around the world to try out the Phase One camera systems in this marvelous landscape.  You can follow the event on the PODAS blog by Clicking Here.  I’ll post a new shot here tomorrow and if all goes well on Friday night I’ll post a Neon Boneyard shot.

Rusty Ships

Rusty Ship ...Buenos AIres - Argentina

I have been to Buenos Aires several times and like to take walks where the normal tourist  doesn’t go.  come to find out that many places I have visited on these walks are quite dangerous.  I guess I have been lucky to have never been bothered.  This image is along a dock in the harbor.  There is a long line of ships docked along a pier that look like they were docked there 20 years ago and forgotten.  Buenos Aires is full of rust.  I have posted some other rusty ships previously.   This ship just had the skeleton left as anything of value was stripped off of it.  I took my chances boarding this ship and walking on very rusty and rotten floors to get into position to shoot this shot.  It has everything I love – rust and peeling paint and nice geometry.  Look for more rusty ships in the future. My son being the soldier he is insists that next time I take him as my PSD.  That is not short for a file extension but for Personal Security Detail.

Scary Head

scary head - Sunset Junque in Michigan

My favorite Antique, junk yard – Sunset Junque in Michigan is a photographer’s paradise.  This image was of a paper mache character there.  I love the blue eyes.  I took the image shot with a Canon 5D11 and then ran it through the iPad adding some effects.  I think I have made this image creepy enough.  I posted another image I made here a few days ago.  Look for more I have a lot of fun and great images from this place.
