Off To Iceland Tomorrow

Waterfall, Iceland
Waterfall, Iceland

I am heading off to Iceland for my fourth trip tomorrow.  This is one of my favorite places to photograph.  As a fine art landscape photographer I know of no place that offers such stunning beauty no mater what season it is.  This trip will be nice as it is the first one where I won’t be going in summer months.  It will be cold, maybe snowy and best of all there will be darkness.  In June and during the summer there is 24 hours of light.  This also means I’ll be able to shoot the northern lights with the NEW Phase One IQ260 camera.  So stay tuned.  I”ll update the blog as often as internet connections allow.  This shot is from one of the many waterfalls that I converted to B&W.  After the many trips I have made there I try to make things look different.

Door, Door Wall

Door, Door Wall outside of San Miguel, Mexico

As I have mentioned in my previous posts there are a lot of ruins in the San Miguel area.  Not to far out of town are the ruins of an old silver mine.  The building are amazing and I have made a series of great looking images there.  This one is titled Door, Door Wall as that is what you see.  Enjoy!

Live From Decay

20061020_trains_-0154 wcrNature has a way of claiming what is hers.  So many times in my travels I see nature taking back what was hers.  This was very evident in this shot.  I stumbled upon an old box car and it was rusting away.  Out of the rust was the beginnings of a new plant.  Maybe in 50 years there won’t be anything but a pile of rust and dirt and a lot of new plants.  Made with an IQ180 camera from Phase One.

So Many Times

Waterfall In Iceland
Waterfall In Iceland

This is a location I have photographed many times in Iceland.  On each visit I shoot at this wonderful place.  It’s right by the road and has an easy pull off.  I shoot with different lenses and from different angles.  Combine this with different light and every time I leave this great place I walk away with a great image.  Here is one version from a year ago.  I’ll be visiting Iceland again in a few weeks and I am sure going to shoot here again.

Wide Angle Sand Arch

Skyline Arch in Arches National Park
Skyline Arch in Arches National Park

Another image from an absolutely amazing trip to the Moab area.  This shot was made at Sand Arch in Arches National Park.  I used a Phase One IQ 180 camera and a new 28mm LS to create it.  Using depth of field and selective focus I was able to keep everything sharp fro the foreground to the background.  Add great light and it was not hard to get a good image.  I used Capture One to add drama to the image and adjust the brightness of the tree trunk.

The Last Shot Of The Day and Week

Fiery Furnace, Arches National Park
Fiery Furnace, Arches National Park

It’s been a good week in Moab.  I was tagging along on workshops by workshops by Andy Biggs.  We have been centered in Moab making excursions into Canyonlands and Arches National Parks.  Both are amazing  with spectacular overlooks and made for photographers.  This shot was made an area called Fiery Furnace.  I used a Phase One IQ180 and a 150mm lens to capture this shot. I ahve a few more images that will appear in coming days.  This was just one of those moments where the right light and clouds just come together.

I am in Moab area tagging along at 2 workshops being lead by Andy Biggs.  Andy a good friend and Phase One user asked if I could come to these workshops and let attendees experience Phase One cameras.  This is a shot made at skyline arch today.  I found a number of cool angles and made a few nice images.  You can count on seeing more.  This was shot with a Phase One IQ180 camera and 28mm LS lens.  The detail in the file at 80 MP is astounding.

Moab Differently

3 stitch pano in Arches NP, shot with a Phase One IQ180 and 240mm lens
3 stitch pano in Arches NP, shot with a Phase One IQ180 and 240mm lens

I will be in the Moab area through Friday this week.  I have been to Moab many times and it is a very cool areas for photographers to visit.  Amazing how many are right now.  My goal this trip is to shoot things differently.  Like yesterday I shot everything with a long lens.  The picture above was shot with the NEW 240mm lens from Phase One on a Phase One DF+ camera and IQ180 back.  Absolutely amazing image quality.  I will be shooting all week trying different lenses and or different angles to give me images that others don’t usually shoot or see.  Game on.

Scottish Sunrise

Sunrise, Scotland
Sunrise, Scotland

Sorry, it has been a few days since my last post.  I strive to a post a day but sometimes regular life and work are moving too fast .  I am back on a more even keel and  don’t travel again for about a week.  Then I am off to Utah.  That should be a great trip.  This image I made in Scotland a few months back.  On the last morning in Scotland we drove by this location that for whole week was so fog shrouded you couldn’t see 20 feet.  then bam, the day was perfect, clear and still.  This was one of those magic moments photographers love.  I remember standing there as the sun came up, the shadows changed and just kept saying wow!
