Like An Iceberg – Steve Jobs

LIke An Iceberg - Antarctica

In 1984 I watched in awe as Apple introduced the Macintosh. Who will ever forget the first Macintosh ad.  Ever since then I have bought nothing but Apple products and invested in the company.  Yesterday was a sad day as the news of Steve Jobs death spread over the internet.  Steve was a lot of things and he was a rare individual who had a vision and he followed it relentlessly.  His ideals were so simple yet so defining.

While this day was not a huge surprise as we all knew it was coming, it was however the finality of it that hit me hard.  It has affected me today and I find that difficult.  Steve has inspired me with many of his quotes and ideas.  What I find the best at this time is quoted below. He was a visionary not only about his products but also his approach to life and death.

“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs

Thanks Steve for all you have done, how you have made a difference in my life and for sharing your vision . . .

I though the image above was a fitting tribute to this fine man.

Antarctica Whaling Station

Antarctica Whaling Station, Deception Island

At one time whaling was huge industry in the Antarctica region.  Dotted across the region are old whaling stations, long abandoned where ships would bring whales that were caught, drag them ashore, butcher them and process them.  Stories of bays turning red because of all the blood abound.  Now all that’s left are rusty tanks, pumps, boilers and old building that barely stand.  Of course this is my kind of place liking decay and rust as much as I do.  Today’s image is a shot (one of hundreds) of a whaling station on Deception Island along the Antarctica Peninsula.

Whale Tale

Whale Tale - Antarctica

Every one takes them and I have tons of them.  Each whale tale is special.  It’s an amazing thing to see in person just as a breach is or even when they become very friendly and come within feet of you and poke their heads out of the water.  I love whales and I am amazed and puzzled by them.  This shot was made in Antarctica where I have had some of my best whaling shots.  I played with contrast and a few other things to boost the impact of this image.

Back To Rust

Rust - Antarctica

Here is a real simple shot made in Antarctica.  I haven’t posted any rust shots for a while and thought today would be a good day to bring you rust.  This was a cover of a tank hatch at a whaling station in Antarctica.  I took some creative liberties with in on Snapseed  on the iPad.  I like it!

I am home now and major catch up mode after weeks on the road.  Adventures took me form Ireland to China and then to Chicago.  Great stuff, great PODAS workshops, super nice new friends.  But, it is always good to be home.  I have a few small trips in the next few weeks before heading to the Palouse for a major PODAS workshop there.  Also, we launched a new workshop yesterday in the UK with Miss Anelia and Drew Gardner.  Check it out!

Big Iceberg

Big Iceberg and Bird, Antarctica

It has been a hot week in China and thought that today I would cool things off a bit.  One thing that I marvel at is icebergs.  There are all sorts of different bergs out there.  This one is a tabular berg and could measure three quarters of a mile wide and deep.  There are some that are much bigger.  This one was caught with the bird that adds foreground and makes the shot work.

Made It To China

Boat Bow - Ushuia, Argentina

Internet seems kind of spotty so who knows what I will be able to post.  Arrived in China after very long plane rife.  Met up some fellow Phase One team members and then crashed.  So here I am in a  nice hotel overlooking a very Rainy Beijing.  It will be a packed day today with lots of meetings, interviews and presentations as I promote PODAS workshops to the China market.  Should be fun.  I’ll report back as often as I can.

Today’s image was made in Ushuia a stopping off point to th Antarctica.  Saw this boat on the beach and shot in real tight on the bow.

Anarctica

Antarctica

Three trips to Antarctica and I have thousands of images that are standout.  I think it is time to gather the images together and make a book.  There are not enough hours in the day and I do have a regular job.  I have a lot of trips with images still waiting for editing and printing.  Today’s image was shot from a zodiac on a cruise in Paradise Bay on my first trip to Antarctica.  I love this image and the reflection.  Shot with a P45+ hand held.

Magical Antarctica

Icebergs On The Horizon, Antarctica

I have had so many great experiences on my three trips to Antarctica.  Each trip has been life changing.  It’s not hard to point a camera in any direction and get a great shot.  It becomes overwhelming at some points.  But I’ll take overwhelming and I’ll take 24 hour days.  Because in the end you end up with images like this.  Today’s image was shot with a Canon 1DS Mark II with a long lens at one of those 3 hour sunset – sunrises that happens in Antarctica.  I have been working on a ton of images from Antarctica and a dozen other places.  With all my travels I have a large backlog but you can count on and endless number of images to be viewed on this blog.

Enjoy!
