Antarctica Sunrise or Sunset

Antarctica Sunrise & Sunset - It was all the same

Antarctica offers a an environment of great photographs.  Dynamic, changing and never cliched.  You can be on shore or the deck of the ship and see and shoot just beautiful images.  This one was made one morning when I was on the deck all by myself.  And, I was presented with this shot of clouds, distant icebergs and the rising sun peeking through cracks in the sky.  Makes for some dynamic photos.  It then got darker and an hour later it was blue skies.  Things happen fast there and they are unpredictable.

The City

Chicago Iron

I love shooting in the city.  Any city will do.  What’s fun is that it is a dynamic environment.  Weather, wind, light, people are always changing it.  I am like a hunter as I am always looking up and down and behind me.  I can see people I want to shoot or a building.  I love coming bak and editing images.  This image is one I like because it is of steel or maybe even old iron and it shows the city in the background.  Kind of symbolizes the whole thing.  The shot has a strong vertical and it balances the buildings in the background.

One Of My Favorite Stores

NYC Apple Store

Who hasn’t made a visit to an Apple store.  I know the one close to me is so jammed with people sometimes that they make you wait in line to get in.  What kind of retail store does that?  One that ha s set new records for sales per square feet and always makes it fun to visit.  Other retailers could only wish they had lines outside of their stores.  And, then there is Microsoft who is building store right across from some Apple locations hoping to grab the leftovers.  Funny to see as there is never anyone in the Microsoft store.  They just don’t get it.  This image is of the Apple store in NYC.  I think tomorrow I’ll post another image from the same store.  Since this shot was made they have completely re-done the famous glass cube so this shot is now kind of unique.  If you are not using an Apple product you owe to yourself to come over to to the light and then you’ll wonder why you waited so long. And, get an iPad while you are at it.

London – Low Angle

It's London

I love London, but I love copenhagen, Barcelona and many more cities also.  This shot was made in a small place where there are these array of small fountains.  I played here for a while trying slow shutter speeds, longer lenses etc until I came up with this shot which I really like.  So today here is LOndon Bridge and fountains.

One Of My Favorites

Ayers Rock - Australia

This is one of my favorite shots.  It was made in Australia which should be obvious on one of the PODAS workshops I lead.  Ken Duncan who is a miracle worker in his own right asked this beautiful girl if she would be in our picture and she agreed.  During the time I was taking this shot flies were buzzing around and she was looking uncomfortable.  Then all of a sudden she just took this amazing pose and I shot it.  Two seconds later she was looking somewhere else.  Sometimes it just works, have patience.

More Ice

Iceberg New Zealand

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

My first post of the new year and it is of ice, my new obsession, or so it seems.  Why am I fascinated by ice?  Because it is here today and gone tomorrow.  It’s not a cliche like so many images of the grand canyon.  Ice is in constant transition, usually the melting kind.  This little iceberg was shot in New Zealand.  I am sure that as the day went on it moved and melted and may have even turtled (which is roll over terms for icebergs).  I have lots of ice pictures and through out this year you will get to see even more.

Bryce

Bryce National Park, UT

A very picture worthy National Park is Bryce where this image was taken.  It’s not an overly large park and there aren’t a lot of places to shoot compared to other parks but there places there are at the right time of the year will reward you greatly.  There are numerous overlooks where you can get terrific sunrise and sunset shots.  Shooting mid-day there is pointless.  Also, if you come at the time of year when it is cold enough and you awake to a light dusting of snow the park just turns into a fairytale land.  Be sure to take hikes and find places where the normal tourist won’t venture.  Your images will be different and much more rewarding. Jagged Ice

Jagged Ice, Iceland

This shot was made in Iceland at the Glacier Lagoon.  I used a long lens on my 5dII to shoot elements of the ice.  Tight shots of ice using the telephoto to compress the perspective together.  It was amazing what you saw as a frame when doing this vs. what the overall scene looked like.  I enjoy using the camera frame to isolate images.  I do this both with the telephoto lens and macro lens doing close ups.

Ice Everywhere

Iceberg and Glacier, Iceland

No matter where you look there is ice.  I guess Iceland gets the name with ice in it for a reason.  In certain parts of Iceland there are many glaciers and I am talking really big glaciers.  And these Glaciers loose Ice all the time.  This is a shot of an iceberg with a big glacier behind it.  I believe the glaciers is called Steinholtsjökull, good luck on pronouncing it.  This glacier like a lot of others has a lake at the bottom of it that icebergs break off into and float around.  With all good landscape shots it is good to have a foreground and the iceberg did a great job of providing the foreground against this large glacier.

Church In Iceland

Bible in church in Iceland

While in Iceland last year I kept driving a route along the coast and I kept seeing this church way on top of a hill.  I shot images of the church with long lens as clouds descended on it and birds flew around it.  Finally one day I decided to find the church and searched for the roads leading to the church.  It was a small church and I found my way to the top of the hill it sat on.  From its vantage point you could see the ocean and coast for miles and the beautiful landscape all around.  Of course I expected the doors to be locked but I was surprised to see them open.  Inside was a warm cozy beautifully maintained interior.  I had to shoot pictures so I shot the interior of the church and the organ, pews and alter as well as todays shot of the church bible.  I was using a P65+ so detail was something I knew could be captured.  I really liked this image because of the way the light came though and hit the awl and bible.  Maybe I should have lit the candles, but I had no matches.   Anyway the detail is so good that on the 30×40 print you can read all the works on the bible’s open pages.  Maybe I’ll post the organ form the church in a future blog. I actually did a four exposure stitch of that one.
