A list Ove A Year Way Another South Georgia Island Visit

In just a little over a year, I will hopefully (pandemic depending) be heading to Ushuaia, Argentina to board the Ocean Nova for yet another voyage to the most incredible location on the planet.  Our trip is being hosted by one of my companies Rockhopper Workshops.  It’s a 20-day trip visiting the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica.  It is the ultimate bucket list trip.

The image above was a shot as we approached S. Georgia Island.  This place never disappoints with great light and clouds and is teaming with wildlife.

Punta Arenas Boat

fishing boat

Prior to taking a flight to Antarctica I usually have a few days to explore Punta Arenas.  There’s a lot to explore in this southern Chile city.  Sometimes I’ll take a taxi and hire the driver to take me to various places and wait for me.  This was made along the waterfront and there were a number of fishing boats hauled out of the water and on blocks.  So, I used a wide-angle lens and had some fun.  It’s not an award-winning image but it was fun to shoot. I added the Orton effect to give it a bit of soft focus.

The Dolomites

About ten years ago I found the Dolomites.  I looked at a lot of photos online and these beautiful images of grand mountain vistas were continuing to show up.  So with a bit of investigation I learned about the Dolomites.  I found a photographer that was familiar with the region and had him join us as a leader for the area. The workshop was a success.  I have now made several trips there and plan to do more as well as possibly another workshop in the next year.  These images are just a few that one can expect from this region, otherwise known as the Italian side of the alps.

Dash With Class

One of the things I love doing in the Palouse is exploring and photographing abandoned cars and trucks.  They seem to be everywhere.  It seems they all have their stories.  One day someone parked the vehicle and just left it there never to return.  I like to document the curves and textures as seen in some of my previous posts.  This image today is of an old pickup truck dashboard shot with my Sony 100-400mm lens.  I like using long lenses for images that some wouldn’t think of using a long lens for.  The thing that I love most is peeling p[aint.  I don’t know where this comes from but it is fun to see how time and nature change as well as reclaims things.

Stormy Sky #1 Palouse

One of the things that are special about the Palouse is what I call the big sky.  The sky is part of the Palouse and many times actually becomes the focus of the image.  Whether the skies are blue with puffy clouds or dark and gray with an approaching storm, they are always special.

Final Iceland Workshop Images

The Iceland 2017 Winter Workshop is over. My apologies for not posting more images while it was taking place. We were shooting non-stop from dawn to sunset, doing dinner and sometimes out looking for Northern Lights. Wasn’t much time at the end of the day. So, here’s the final selects for now. The workshop was fantastic. I am going to do more small group workshops in the future. It allowed us to do so much more. The group was the best and they all had talent and great eyes for composition. The summer workshop is almost sold out so if you want to see Iceland sign up today. I will not be doing any Iceland tours in 2018. Thank you, Daniel Bergmann my friend and the best guide in Iceland.

Lemaire Channel – One End To The Other

I really enjoy doing panorama photos. Not only do they make large files that I can print large but they also allow a viewer to see a lot more in an image than a traditional single shot frame does.  There are a lot of photographers that make a big point out of doing perfect panoramas using special rigs and aligning the nodel points to perfection.  While I do that sometimes most of the time I just don’t the gear or the time.  As a matter of fact a lot of time I can really good panos just by panning the camera handheld.  And, that’s exactly what I did with this image.  I was on a moving ship traveling through the Lemaire Channel.  It’s a most amazing place in Antarctica and while you can get great single frame images I saw an opportunity and thought I’d give it a shot by doing a handheld pano while the ship was moving.  The water was calm and the sunrise was just happening.  A gorgeous,  moment is the only way to describe it.  So I did two series of pans and one turned out.  Photoshop where I did the stitching together of the images, was brilliant at compensating for the movement of the ship and thus this is the image I ended up with.  The channel can be seen from one end to the other.
