A Little Color

Tulips, Holland, Michigan

Today is a cold damp, rainy, dreary Indiana day.  So today I thought of spring and present tulips keeping in mind it won’t be long until we see these popping through the earth.  This was shot in Holland, Michigan where they celebrate with a Tulip Feestival every spring.  Hope I can make it there this year.

Not Very Happy

One thing I haven’t posted much of here on this blog is people and animals.  I am going to have to change that and today I present a mad animal.  This si a seal shot during a cold blowing snow morning in Antarctica.  These were big animals and the sounds they made were unearthly.  Anyway this guy wasn’t too happy that we were interrupting his nap.

The Long Haul

The Long Haul

It was a cold day when we set out to reach the top of a small mountain in Necko Harbor, Antarctica. It was one of those days with kind of white out conditions. There was no defining horizon just human beings in bright yellow parkas   white The view was spectacular and worth the long climb. The way back down was really fun as we all just sat down on the snow and slid all the way to the bottom and it was a long way. Just another great memory from a great trip.

Different Angles

Palladium - Performing Arts Center- Carmel, IN

When I go out shooting I am always looking, moving my head, looking up, down and behind.  I love looking at things from different angles.  This is a shot of the new Palladium in Carmel, IN. It’s a magnificent building and I assure you that more images will appear here of this building.  This particular shot was made looking straight up.  I tried to show off the defining part of this building, carved limestone and columns.  Show with a 5dII with 17mm lens.  Then converted to BW in Capture One.

Laughing It Off

Laughing It Off

The other day I posted a photo of a Dane who was sleeping it off.  Other Danes take the way they handle drinking a bit different.  This fellow was just standing there and laughing.  He was just laughing, actually howling-laughing.  A very happy guy for some reason.  Not a care in the world.  This is what I like most about doing street photography is the unexpected.  This was made on one of my many walk-abouts in Copenhagen. When doing street shooting you have to look everywhere.   Don’t be bashful but be quick with the camera.

Nice Ice

Ice in Iceland of course.  This image was shot in Iceland at the Glacial Lagoon.  You could spend all day there shooting.  Tough part is editing all the great images that you have photographed.  This image was shot in a heavy wind with a long lens.  The long lens compresses the shot.  The pattern and color carrty off the rest really well.

Storm Bergs

Storm and Icebergs, Antarctica

Today I share a shot from my last trip to Antarctica.  One thing you see while in Antarctica is vast seascapes.  You can see storms moving across the horizon.  Add to the storms a foreground of icebergs and you have a nice photograph.  Shot with a 5dII with a 400mm lens.  I have a lot of these kind if images and they are always nice to look at.  If you ever go to Antarctica bring lots of data cards as you will take more photographs than you ever thought you could.

Long Island Boat House

Long Island Boat House

I went through an HDR phase – High Dynamic Range photography.  It’s fun and serves a purpose with digital photography as it allows you to show highlight and shadow detail in a contrasty lighting condition.  Today too many photographers overuse it.  For me, I kind of dabble in.  I use it when it is needed which with Phase one cameras is not too often.  In this shot taken at a boatyard where my son was painting the fishing boat he runs, I decided that I was going to sue it and I would go to the grunge look for the whole day.  This is a shot of the little boat house.  What’s cool is you can see inside the boathouse as well as detail in bright sun.  I figured if I was going to do this I might as well exaggerate everything and bang here’s the shot.  I have another one from this day I’ll publish at a later date.

Gone Fishing

Fisherman Key west, FL

Key West, FL on a morning walk shooting photos I came across this guy standing in the water fishing.  I couldn’t resist the photo and took a series of shots.  This was done  with a long lens from a higher perspective so there was no horizon in the shot.  I just love the way it feels and looks and has been a longtime favorite of mine.
