Ice, Seal, Storm

Seal on ice flow with distant stormIt’s pretty hard not to take a good photo when visiting Antarctica.  I’m asked many time how you shoot in Antarctica and what to bring.  I travel as light as possible.  You won’t need a tripod.  It’s bright enough you can shoot handheld all the time.  Almost everything you shoot from bounces around.  Zodiacs and the ship are always moving so handheld is a must.  I travel with a 5dII and 16-35, 34-105, 100-400 lenses.  In addition my main camera is a Phase One P65+ with 74-150mm, 28mm, 45mm,  210mm lenses.  A bunch of batteries, CF cards and portable external hard drives for duplicate back-ups.  I work entirely in CApture One to work my images and shoot RAW all the time.

This image was taken from the deck of the boat looking over an ice flow we were moving through.  There was a storm off in the background which was just great looking.  I was lucky when I spotted a seal on the ice flow and I just waited until we moved to a point where the shot looked good.

One Of My Favorites

Boy On Street, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Merry Christmas . . . Hope you and your families are enjoying a great day.  I am having a good time in Florida with my family. This is one of my favorite images. It encompasses al the things I like about photography – color, geometry, placement of subject and mood. It was photographed on the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina. I enjoy street photography as we know it in the photography world and I’ll share a lot of my street photography as we move forward. This was shot with a Canon 5dII with a 70-300 DF lens. The advantage of this lens is it has a good zoom ratio but is compact. Makes catching a shot like this easy.

Statue Of Liberty

New York, New York - Statue Of Liberty

Okay, there is this technique called HDR – High Dynamic Range imaging and it can be cool but overdone.  But it is fun.  This is a shot from a series I did in Las Vegas using HDR techniques. It is obvious what it is and it photography with a Canon 5dII at New York, NY Hotel. Then I messed with it doing HDR and then once it was in my gallery on the iPhone I played with it some more to make this shot. It’s all about having fun using the tools a photographer has today.

Black and White Art

Sailboat In Seattle

Sometimes we forget the beauty of Black & White photography. This photograph was shot digitally and the converted to Black & White. I used several steps in Photoshop to give it this etherial look.  Hope you enjoy it. It was photographed in a harbor in Seattle.  It was a small sailboat at a maritime museum.

For the next several days the blog will be on Auto Pilot as I head into the Australia Outback. I should re-surface with internet connection next week on Monday. So until then enjoy the posting I have prepared.

Las Vegas Feast For The Eyes

Many people go to Las Vegas for the games and a chance win millions. Me, I enjoy the scenery. No matter where you point your camera there is something to take a photo of. So, you will see a lot of Las Vegas photos appearing in this blog. Todays photo is of the roller coaster at New York, NY Hotel. This was a series of three images blended together using HDR. The three exposures consisting of over, normal and under are blended together. While the camera was still the roller coaster was moving, giving a ghostly look. Just a fun shot.

Pan Head Billy

Pan Head Billy

This photo is one of those photos that just happens.  I was shooting around Artists Palette in Death Valley and there was this guy leaning against his motorcycle admiring the light on the mountain.  I took a shot and the original photo was of his back.  Well, I decided to go up and talk to this guy.  He was a fascinating guy and had been on the road for 17 years.  His nick name was “Pan Head Billy”.  As the light started to diminish and turn golden I asked if he would mind posing.  So he took this pose and I took the shot.  The detail on this image shows all his belongings he carries with him, his ruggedness and confidence.  I put the image in my gallery and one day was messing with it on some of the apps I had and ended up with this.  Hope you enjoy it.
