There is nothing better than being amongst some amazing icebergs and have a whale sighting. For this image we were cruising in the iceberg graveyard when a humpback surfaces and the image was made even better by the iceberg background. This is what visiting the Antarctica region is all about.
Year: 2014
Old Irish School House
I was going through and doing cataloging of some of my images from the last few years and stumbled upon this one. I have a ton of older images that I have made a vow to get organized. So, this an abandoned school house that sits on a hill and overlooks the ocean. The location is beautiful. If I was a student at this school I would have been day dreaming of big ocean adventures everyday. Guess they abandoned it because none of the students could concentrate on school work.
Donkey and Tree
Who left their donkey behind? Shot near Metztitlan, Mexico. See it on google earth CLICK HERE
Fields From Afar
I was visiting Mexico recently and my Friend Micahel along with Lars traveled into the heart of Mexico to do some landscape photography. We traveled many back roads and some of these were treacherous. This image was made near Metztitlan, Mexico. I shot it from a hillside as the sun was setting. The low light offered some nice shadows and textures. You can view the location for this shot by CLICKING HERE.
Sunset, Oh Yeah
Ok, it’s a sunset. But, it’s a cool sunset. Antarctica has lovely sunsets. They last a long time and have amazing color. This was one shot from the ship after we finished an amazing zodiac cruise through the Iceberg Graveyard. A great way to end what had been a 20 hour day of photography.
The Best Rust
I am a rust addict. Ok, I have come clean. There is some attraction to rust that makes e seek it our. Rust has its own story. It is the decay of something that was. I find rust everywhere and love the texture and colors. It’s almost like an abstract. The best rust is in Antarctica and this trip I did a lot of rust shots on Deception Island. You’ll see more posted here. You can always use the tag on the right and click on rust to see all the rusty pictures.
Sunrise In The Lemaire Channel
One of the essential places to visit in Antarctica is the Lemaire channel. This is passage that takes about an hour through a narrows and it is just spectacular especially at dawn or sunset. This was a beautiful start to what turned into a 20 hour day of photography on my recent trip to Antarctica.
Whale Oil Tanks
Rust is a favorite subject of mine and I am always surprised at how much rust I find in Antarctica. These are whale oil tanks on Deception Island. This place is an abandoned and kind of surreal place. It’s an old whale processing plant from a hundred years ago. They slaughtered thousand of whales here without any regard. When you walk the beach there and then see images of the beach back then littered with whale bones it kind of creeps you out. Thus I shot this image to illicit some mood and tone for what used to take place there.
Tub On The Porch
Prior to the trip to Antarctica a number of the party I was was traveling with decided to visit Valparaiso, Chile. This is a seaside city on the coast of Chile built on a hillside. I was surprised on how lovely this city was and the energy this city had. Certainly is on mum list to visit again next year when I go back to Antarctica. We spent a lot of time walking the streets here and shooting wall art and city views. Then we stumbled on this bathtub on a porch. I am sure you can think of any number of reasons this tub is here. Have fun.
The Amazing Group For Our 2014 Antarctica Workshop
We have just competed the Luminous-Landscape 2014 Fly Over The Drake – Antarctica Photo Workshop. It was an amazing time and trip. This is the group shot for the trip. Looks like a happy group.
