If You Don’t Succeed The First Time . . .

Black Cottage, Scotland
Black Cottage, Scotland

This is one of those iconic images of Scotland.  It’s the famous Black Cottage.  There is always a photographer or two there shooting this little cottage.  They key is getting it at the right time of say with light and clouds.  And, as was the norm for this trip to Scotland everything fell into place on the third try.  This is a hrs place to shoot and requires a bit of post processing work to balance foreground and background and make it all look good.  I have a large print of this and it is stunning. Shot on a Phase One IQ180 it has amazing detail.

Fast waters In Iceland

Jökulsárlón, Iceberg Rapids, Iceland
Jökulsárlón, Iceberg Rapids, Iceland

I have always loved this image. A few years ago I was in Iceland and scouting out locations with Daniel Bergman. We traveled to all sorts of cool places and covered a lot of ground. However as usual a number r of my best images came from Jokulsarlon. This is a giant lagoon where glaciers all meet these in turn have ice that brakEs off otherwise known as calving. The light that night was so good. The day really never ended.  We had like a three hour sunset that merged into a sunrise. There is a point where these icebergs flow out of the lagoon and to the ocean. The ocean then deposits them on the beach which is another great spot for excellent images. The lagoon got clogged at the point where these icebergs flow out and they created a dam of sorts. Water backed up and then ran over these form their own sets of rapids. I got right up to the spot with a wide angle lens on my Phase One and managed to get these shots. This is one of my favorite.

Chapel On The Hill

Chapel On The Hill, Tuscany, Italy
Chapel On The Hill, Tuscany, Italy

There is no questions the Tuscany landscape is a photographers dream. As good as it is though it is a challenge to shoot as so much of the landscape is far away and there is little foreground subjects to aid in composition. So, when shooting you need to look at things different. In this case I let the sky be dominant and it then draws you to the subject matter which id the chapel on the hill as some otto the other buildings. I also let the clouds above the chapel anchor the eye to the bottom 1/3⅓ f the image. Shot with a Phase One IQ260 and 240mm lens.

I’m Back, So Let’s Get Going Again

Sunrise, Broome, Austrailia
Sunrise, Broome, Austrailia

I have returned from an amazing trip in the Kimberley, Australia. This was an incredible area of magnificent beauty.  The trip was aboard the True North a small and very cool cruise ship designed to explore this area of the world. We also had a helicopter on board that allowed us access to areas no one else could get to. So over the coming days you’ll be seeing some images from this trip. Today’s image was made in Broome, Austrailia before we started the trip.

Twilight Down South

Sunset - sunrise and iceberg
Sunset – sunrise and iceberg

At certain times of year in Antarctica the days are very long.  There are sunsets that blend into sunrises.  There is color and beauty that you can only see at the bottom of the world.  This is one of those typical sunset – sunrises.  I am so looking forward to visiting there again later this year.  For now it is off to Australia in a few days for what promises to be a great 2 weeks of photography.

Cloudy, Cold and Foggy

Foggy Cold Morning In Tuscany
Foggy Cold Morning In Tuscany

Sometimes sunrises don’t have sun.  They still offer a chance to shoot some nice images as in this image.  We made it to the top of an overlook hill.  We could see two different valleys.  Fog was rolling in and changing the scene every few minutes allowing for a lot of picture taking.  After viewing the images I selected this one as one that works well.  Hope you enjoy it.
