Iceland In The Winter – Join Me

Iceland is so beautiful in the winter.  This image was made at Stockness.  It’s different on every visit. I’m leading a workshop there March 20-30. 2017 (this March) and still have room for a few attendees.  I will not be doing a winter workshop there in 2018.  So, jump on board and see Iceland the way it was meant to be seen.  Visit my Rockhopper Workshops for more information.   Guaranteed fun plus amazing photos. Hope to see you there.  If you have any questions, email me.

Red Roof Church

As you can see if you have been folloWing my blog for a while, I have a thing with Iceland.  It’s. amagical place.  I always find something different to photograph there.  I was on a day tour from Reykjavik and came across this church on one of the many back road I explored.  The red roof and the background makes for a very serene photo.

Puffin

When visiting Iceland it is a fun side trip to find and visit a puffin colony.  These cute birds usually nest along cliffs and there are some spots in Iceland where they are quite prevalent.  They are colorful birds and put on quite a show.  During the nesting times, these birds will fly into the ocean, grab some krill and fly up to the cliff.  They then wait a few minutes to make sure the coast is clear and then fly to their chicks with a mouth full of food.  I shot a ton of images of the Puffins and used the Fuji XT-2 and 100-00mm lens.  It was great fun plus I got some nice images.

Iceland In The Winter

I know a lot of people like to sit on a beach in winter and go someplace war.  Me, I love the cold places and you’ll find me in Antarctica and Iceland.  This is the kind of image you can expect from Iceland in the winter.  And, believe it or not, it’s not that cold.  Iceland is best in winter and thus you get ice shots in Iceland.  This is a pano made at one of the iceberg lagoons.   There are a lot of other really incredible places in icealnd to be seen in winter.  Imagine beautiful frozen waterfalls with gorgeous sunsets.  If you are interested than consider traveling with me this MArch as I take photographers on an Icealnd Winter Workshop.

Kirkjufellsfoss Waterfalls -Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland

Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland is a beautiful place to visit.  Iceland has a ton of iconic locations like this.  I have been shooting there for years and at this location.  Typically all of us at a workshop pile out of the van and head to the waterfalls.  We try to duplicate other iconic images made from this spot.  This year was different.  I got out of the van and headed off in my own direction determined to find a different shot.  The image above is what I found.  The light was right.  The lead in composition worked.  Mission accomplished.

Angry Surf

This was a fun shot to do.  We were in Iceland and it was windy and cold.  We visited this location where the surf was just exploding on very rough rocks.  The sun was breaking through the clouds and adding nice color.  I dragged the shutter a bit to emphasize the breaking surf.  While were there one photographer got a bit too cocky and got close to the edge.  A big wave came up and knocked him and his tripod over and almost washed him out with the wave.  I see this kind of thing a lot in Iceland.  Everything from weather to waves is unpredictable in Iceland.  Word to the wise, be careful.

Ice Cave Ceiling

FB_DSC0185-613-clrtyOne of our highlights on the Iceland trip was visiting an Ice Cave.  Not only was the experience of getting to the cave fun but the cave was pretty cool too.  We had to use big four-wheeled drive vehicles to get these and then once there get into all sort of gear.  The light inside was all blue as the ice filters away all other light,  So, here is a photo of the ice cave ceiling and one of me looking like I am straight out of the Blue Man Group.

Back From Iceland

Icebergs on the beach. They just glowed. We hot the beach at the right time with the right light. What you don't see is the gaggle of Chinese tourists that I had to work around to get this shot.

You may have noticed I have been absent from any recent posts.  This was due to leading a workshop in Iceland for Luminous-Landscape.  We had a great workshop and we saw and did some amazing things.  It was quite the adventure for sure.  We had everything Iceland could throw at us weather wise.  From cold and high winds to beautiful mild winter weather with perfect clouds. So, to get things caught up I will share a number of images I had posted on Facebook during the trip.  My camera for this trip was the Sony A7rII as well as my iPhone.   I had fun using both and you’ll see images made with each.  These images are just a drop in the bucket of some beautiful images I have come home with.  More will be coming.  I am leading another Iceland workshop in June.  And in a few weeks will head off to Patigonia and the Altiplano for two back to back workshops.  So, expect lots of images.

Stockiness, one of my favorites places. I have a number of different and dramatic shots made here over the years.
