Iceland is one of the most beautiful locations for doing landscape photography. The vistas just keep coming at you. Hard to describe unless you visit. I am leading another workshop there next May and look forward to visiting and photographing there again. The image above is the base of one of the hundreds of waterfalls that exist there. I dragged the shutter a bit to get the feel of the water hitting the shoots then played with the image on the ipad a bit. This was photographed with a Phase One P65+ back so I had 60 megapixels to work with. This shot doesn’t come close to showing the detail in the images.

Cool Horse
Icelandic horses are some of the toughest and nicest horses in the world. They just have life all figured out. Strong and sturdy yet sort of small. They have these long manes that just blow in the wind and great strong eyes that penetrate you and catch you. They remind me of rock stars, long hair blowing in the wind and they just know they are bad ass. I shot this in color on a Phase One P65+ then turned it into BW on the iPad.
Icelandic Hot Spring
Todays image was done in Iceland. My guide Daniel Bergman and I went for a drive to some place way out in the middle of no where. There was this huge area of geothermal springs. Bubbling holes in the ground with steam and hot water. Really hot water. Some holes were smaller like this one. wonderful colors were surrounding these prints caused by minerals rising out of the ground. I have some great shots of this area.
Iceland Iceberg Beach
In honor of some of my friends who are now touring in Iceland I present one of my Iceland shots – icebergs on the beach. This beach is truly an amazing place. Icebergs wash out to sea from Jokulsarlon Lagoon and then when the tide switches around they wash up on the beach where the crashing waves begin to erode them to these beautiful diamond like Icebergs. The beach is littered with them for a very long distance. Quite the site to see and photograph. It’s different every day. So to Harry, Teri, Einir and others – have a great time there.
Stairs
I love circular staircases. The perspective and how they fade away and repeat patterns has always intrigued me. Today’s shot was made at the Hilton in Iceland. I was sitting in the bar and there was this giant staircase that was more or less a circular one. I played with a number of shots and settled on this one. Enhanced it a bit on my iPad.
Iceland Church Window
This simple photo was made inside a small church sitting on top of a hill overlooking the sea in Iceland. It was shot with a Phase One P65+ camera and 80mm lens. THe shot is incredibly detailed. You can some in on the full size image a read the text on the bible and see the texture of the paper. The P65+ also has a large dynamic range which allows me to capture the details in highlights and shadow areas all on the same single exposure.
Diamonds On The Beach
This image is from Iceland and a beach close to a glacial lagoon. What happens is this large glacier produces icebergs and these icebergs float around in this giant glacial lagoon. eventually they find their way to the ocean. There they float and eventually get thrown up on shore and left there at low tide. It is amazing to walk onto this black sand beach and see these bergs. Hundreds of them on a typical low tide as far as you can see. Each one beautiful. You could spend hours there shooting.
Nice Ice
Ice in Iceland of course. This image was shot in Iceland at the Glacial Lagoon. You could spend all day there shooting. Tough part is editing all the great images that you have photographed. This image was shot in a heavy wind with a long lens. The long lens compresses the shot. The pattern and color carrty off the rest really well.
They Do Things Different In Iceland
As you have seen from previous posts I like doing street photography. Wandering around Reykjavík, Iceland oner afternoon I came across this store window. Couldn’t help think how different this was from the Victoria Secret windows in the US. This was shot on an iPhone 4 and then worked on in several apps. I guess when you have the long winters like Iceland does that a store like this must sell a number of these.
Ice
I do like cold places and I am always fascinated by ice. Some of my best photos are of ice. This shot was part of a series of close-ups of ice taken on an iceberg beach in Iceland. The story is that there is a glacier nearby and as the glacier calves, the icebergs slowly flow out o t the ocean. At high tide they are pushed to the beach and when the tide goes out they are stranded. The beach is littered with icebergs. Some as big as a house or car and some the size of baseballs. They are like finding diamonds. I like this one and others like it as the light comes through and reveals the beautiful patterns the icebergs have. Look for more in the near future.
