Ice and Iceberg

Iceberg, Antarctica

This iceberg has long since melter.  As we traveled through Antarctica we would come upon icebergs like this and we would ask our russian captain if he would circle the bergs so we could photograph it from all angles and he usually complied.  I liked this one because of the sky and blues as well as ice flow in front.  It also looks great in B&W.

Iceberg So Simple

Iceberg, Antarctica

This has been one of my favorite shots from many years.  Something about the angles, color and the fact that this was an iceberg.  Photographed from a ship in Antarctic I used a long lens to shoot close up sections of the iceberg.  This is blue and smooth because the ocean just keeps splashing on it and the water running off of it smooths it out.  I love the colors and the fact that nature created this and that this iceberg is long gone.

Iceberg at Sunrise

Iceberg, Antarctica

Well you may have noticed that I have not made posts for several days.  I was quite busy when in Copenhagen setting up all the infrastructure for this years PODAS workshops.  We managed to set up three new workshops as well as take care of a lot of planning and a marketing plan for that will be an excellent workshop series this year.    Todays image was made several hers ago while cruising Antarctica.  The sky for several hours just stayed a purple color as the sun just set below the horizon but it never got dark.  Kind of like a sunset that turns into sunrise in a matter of 90 minutes.  Anyway today was a cold day when I awoke so I though it to be a good iceberg day.

Lonely Seal

Lonely seal and storm, Antarctica

Imagine if you will what the life of the seal in this picture’s life is like. Living in Antarctica, looney, cold, unpredictable and something always trying to eat you.  This shot was made on one of my trips to this amazing continent.  It shows pretty well what Antarctica is all about.  Giant, lonely and ever changing.  This was made on the way to an area called the Gullet.  We went through an ice flow and there this seal was with a storm in the background.  I just love it.

Antarctica Sunrise or Sunset

Antarctica Sunrise & Sunset - It was all the same

Antarctica offers a an environment of great photographs.  Dynamic, changing and never cliched.  You can be on shore or the deck of the ship and see and shoot just beautiful images.  This one was made one morning when I was on the deck all by myself.  And, I was presented with this shot of clouds, distant icebergs and the rising sun peeking through cracks in the sky.  Makes for some dynamic photos.  It then got darker and an hour later it was blue skies.  Things happen fast there and they are unpredictable.

Old Boat and Penguins

Whaling boat - Antarctica

On one of our landings in Antarctica we came across this old abandoned and falling apart boat and there were a few penguins next to it.  I shot quickly as the penguins were busy and had someplace to go.  I saw this image in my library the other day and decide i liked it but I should do something to give it an old look.  Using SnapSeed on the MAc I did some adjustments to get to this. Now the image kind of goes with the boat and the whole feel of being old and abandoned.

Lamar Channel

Lamar Channel, Antarctica

The Lamar channel is a very cool place to cruise through especially if you get to cruise it at sunset.  On my first Antarctica trip we cruised the channel at magic hour.  The sun was low and the moon was coming up.  The sky turned orange and purple and the water looked like it had a sheen of oil on it from the reflection.  Just an amazing experience.  This is a shot taken at one end of the channel.  I believe these two peeks are called Ulla’s Tits.  Must be a story behind it.

Sinking Ship

Sinking ship, Ushuaia, Argentina

On my first trip to Antarctica we traveled to the southern most city in South America, Ushuaia.  Pretty cool place and also the launching pint for a lot of trips to Antarctica.  While we spent the day waiting to board the ship a number of us went shooting in and around Ushuaia.  This boat I found in the harbor, kind of sinking.  I sent the image home and told people this is the boat we were taking to across the Drake Passage and some of my friends (at least the gullible ones) believed me.

Deception Bay – Antarctica

Deception Island - Antarctica

Good day, hope you are ready for Holiday cheer.  Two of my bus and their wive and girlfriend arrived last night.  My third son will be here today.  Going to be  a great weekend and Christmas.  This shot was made on one of my three trips to Antarctica.  It is in Deception BAy.  THis is actually a collapsded volcano and it is really hard to get into.  The place is huge and beautiful with an old whaling station on it.  Very seldom do you find a crystal clear day like the one I did this picture on.  I just love Antarctica and I am working on organizing a Photo expedition there in 2013.

Big Blue

Big Blue

Got cold here today (chilly) but none the less I thought ice.  So, it’s iceberg picture time.  Another image from thousands that I have of ice and cold in Antarctica.  This was a beautiful blue iceberg that slipped into a bay where our ship was anchored.  we did a Zodiac cruise around it and I shot a number of angles.  I like this low angle and the deep blue.  Shot with a Phase One P65+ and a 28mm lens hand held.
