The Gullett Pano

The Gullett, Antarctica

CLICK ON THE IMAGE and Then Click again for a larger view

On my last trip to Antarctica as we dipped below the Antarctic Circle we headed to an area that was known as the Gullett.  we had been battling storms and lousy weather for days.  As we approached the Gullett which is visited by very few people, the weather cleared to the most brilliant day you could ever have and the wind just stopped.  Literally now wind.  As we entered the Gullet which we would navigate for almost 12 hours we were met with the most breathtaking scenery you could ever imagine.   Today’s image is a a stitched shot for 5 vertical P65+ images.  These were shot handheld and then stitched in photoshop.  The lens was wide i believe 45mm which allowed some great foreground.  The sky was almost black getting blue s it met the horizon.  I have a ton of images from the Gullet but this pano gives a good feel for the beauty there.

Tanks and Ice

Tank In Antarctica

Sometimes when exploring in remote parts of the world you stumble upon some unusual things.  This shot was taken in Antarctica and is one of two rusted tanks that we found.  Apparently a long time ago at this remote base Americans used these modified tanks as a means to get around.  What was really interesting is that the tanks were fitted with rotary aircraft engines.  This was show with a P65+ camera and the detail in the image is just amazing.  Capture One allowed me to go in and pull details in the shadow area and the bright snow to make an excellent image.

Ice and Seal

Ice and Seal

Once again we went for a zodiac ride to explore this magnificent bay we anchored in.  We came across beautiful icebergs, a shore full of penguins and this shot.  As we were cruising towards the iceberg in the background we found this smaller iceberg with a Leopard Seal on it.  It mazes me the wildlife that abounds in Antarctica.  As a matter of record, these seals are very aggressive and distance needs to be kept.

Big Blue

Big Blue

Well, it’s Birthday day for me.  Feeling great and loving life!

This photo today was taken on an evening Zodiac cruise.  We would drive around in zodiacs looking for photos.  This giant Iceberg had floated into the chennel and we circled it and shot it froma  lot of angles.  I loved the intense blue color and shot this froma low angle.  When we awoke in the morning this iceberg was gone and drifted along on its journey.

I Love B&W

Golden BAy - South Georgia Islands

We get so caught up in color and how easy it is to make great color images in this digital age.  Sometimes it is nice to re-visit B&W.  This image was shot near Golden Bay in the South Georgia Islands.  This was a magnificent day with blue skies, high winds, great clouds.  The renticular clouds that formed over the mountains, the snow and layered lower level clouds all combine to make an excellent photo.

Happy New Years Eve . . . party well and party safe.

Peeling Paint

Peeling Paint on Railroad Car

Today’s iamge is a shot I did of a rail car at an old rail yard near Indianapolis. I love peeling paint, rust and such. This is one of those peeling paint shots. It was shot with a P65+ and then worked a bit in Photoshop and on the iPad. Then output for this blog. Just something I was having fun with.

Penguins . . .

Penguins on a mission - Antarctica

Penguins, boy do I have penguins. At one time I honestly could say I had the highest resolution penguin images in the world as I shot this image and many others with the only P65+ at the time to visit Antarctica. These are amazing creatures and over the year and my three visits to Antarctica I have amassed a large library of penguin images. This is a fun shot as three penguins march forward and seem to be on a mission. These are very busy creatures. They always have something to do and they seem focused on getting the task done.  This was shot with a P65+ and 75-150mm lens. The detail in this image is amazing as you can zoom in and see the crystals in the snow. I’ll publish more penguin images over time.

Road Trip

Rusted Train Car and Plant

I am on a holiday road trip to Florida to visit with family. Always good to get together for the holiday. After being cooped up on airplanes so much the last few weeks (a round trip to Australia can pretty much guarantee you’ll want a break from planes), I decided to drive. I also decided that I will make a photo essay during the trip on Waffle Houses, the famous road side restaurant at almost every interchange. I have visited four Waffle Houses so far. I’ll assemble a small essay when I get home. Quite a slice of America.

Today’s images is a fun one. I like photographing rust and decay and how nature seems to re-claim it. This image was taken of the side of a rusted out train car (box car) and in the rust this plant had started to grow. I shot this with a Phase One P65+ and it was in one of my albums on the iPhone. I then used Picture Show and did a mirror effect of the image and the above image is what I got. I like symmetry and you’ll see more images like this over time.

Funky Saturday

Funky Sunset - Olympic National Park, WA

I thought I’d put something different up today.  Just that kind of the mood I am in.  This is a landscape done on a beach near Olympic National Park.  It was shot with a Phase One P65+ and then worked as an HDR from one exposure.  The Phase One camera gives you close to 15 stops dynamic range so I was able to under and over process by two stops with ease.  Brought the images together in PhotoMatix and at that point the image looked very nice.  As a matter of fact I have some large size wall shots that look great.  I had the images in my iphone gallery and was on the plane ride back from Australia and was messing with images in Picture Show app and this one came out.  So, here it is.
