Yes it really did look like this. On one our PODAS workshops to New Zealand we were on top of the mountain overlooking Queenstown and we were blessed with the most amazing light. We saw rainbows, storms and this magnificent display as the sun set and lit up all the clouds. You had to be there.

Lava Falls – Iceland
Iceland is an amazing place to photograph. On my last trip to Iceland in March of 2013 I did a lot of large landscape images and much of it was black and white and stitched images making large panos. These were made with a Phase One IQ180 so I had 80 megapixel images to work with. The detail is amazing in these images. I call the images immersive imaging. What this means at least in my way of thinking is that when I make big print they draw a viewer in. Many times I hang these large 4×9 foot images and watch as someone starts looking at it from 10 feet away. Then something catches their eye and the next thing you know they are a foot away from the images discovering detail like they haven’t seen before in a photograph.
Stalker Castle
I can’t get enough of this amazing location. Here is an image of Castle Stalker in Scotland at sunset.
Dream Landscape
I made my first trip the Dolomites, Italy this year and I will certainly be back. This is a pano image of Alpe Di Diusi. You will be overwhelmed if you visit this location especially when the sun sets and rises. Quite a place.
Scotland Land Of The Castle
One thing I loved about Scotland is the castles. They were everywhere. Seems back in the olden days you had to make sure you could defend your home from nasty neighbors. This castle sits on an island and can only e reached by boat at high tide. Otherwise it is just mud at low tide. There was a small road that became visible at low tide leading to the castle. We lucked out though as we photographed here twice and spectacular sunsets each time. The hard part is keeping detail in the castle while not burning out the sky. I’ll teach you how that is done if you attend one of or LuLa workshops.
If You Don’t Succeed The First Time . . .
This is one of those iconic images of Scotland. It’s the famous Black Cottage. There is always a photographer or two there shooting this little cottage. They key is getting it at the right time of say with light and clouds. And, as was the norm for this trip to Scotland everything fell into place on the third try. This is a hrs place to shoot and requires a bit of post processing work to balance foreground and background and make it all look good. I have a large print of this and it is stunning. Shot on a Phase One IQ180 it has amazing detail.
Hogwarts Train
It’s not too often when you see a movie that you expect that you will actually one day photograph something that was in the movie. This image is of the Hogwarts Train shot in Loch Shiel, Scotland. The bridge is known as Glenfinnan Viaduct. This was made with a Phase One IQ180 digital back on an ALPA STC camera. The detail in the large image I have made is astounding.
Fall Color In Zion
Zion National PArk is a small park in comparison to some others but a lot of beautiful sights are tucked away inside this unusual location. I thought since fall colors are almost upon us that i would post a fall colors in Zion image. This was made about 2 years ago in the first week on November. The park just turns a beautiful color and no matter where you aim your camera you get a good shot.
It’s Fall In Scotland
Rusty Gear
While in Svalbard, Norway we visited an old mining outpost. I was in heaven as there was rust galore. If you are a follower of my blog you’ll know how much I love rust. So, here is the first of a number of rusty images from Svalbard. Made with a Phase One IQ180.
