While visiting the state fair last week I walked past some horse stables. I kind of saw something in this shot with the decorations, golf cart and stuff that was there. Kind of a sur-real set up. So I shot it using the iPhone. I kind of like it.

Nyhaven – Copenhagen, Denmark
There is this area in Copenhagen that in the old days used to be a rough area and typical of the wharfs of cities. But a while back this area was revitalized to be a popular destination. Known as Nyhaven it is a harbor where ships tie up. Now all the store fronts are restaurants and bars and outdoor cafes. It is a great place to visit, very colorful, in many ways and lots to do. I decided to try something new and get very creative. This is a different kind of view of Nyhaven. let me know what you think.
A Beautiful Day In Copenhagen
When it is nice – it is really nice in Copenhagen. Today was an extraordinary day. After a long flight I explored the city with a work colleague and then after a nap I went out shooting. This image I love. Little girl running excited about the fountain. You can read a lot into it. Shot with an iPhone hipstamatic.
Off To Copenhagen
I am off to Copenhagen today through JFK. I have a busy week doing a number of different things while in Denmark, I will be prepping the launch for the 2013 PODAS workshop series as well as meeting with internal depts. and some special customers. Should have some cool shots of Copenhagen to share along the way. This image was made in the Round Tower. A cool place to visit. Back in the old days the King made this so he could drive his carriage to the highest point in Copenhagen and view his kingdom. I have walked up this path to the top and all I can say is poor horse. I do love the light and how it plays with the walls and arches.
La Sal Mountains near Moab
On a trip to Moab with a number of my photographer friends we took a four wheeler ride to the top of some very rocky hill and at the end we were given a contrasting and dramatic view of the La Sal Mountains that are quite visible from Moab. I like the way the foreground contrast with the distant mountains. Shot with a Phase One IQ180.
Up Close and Personal
I have had the chance to see a lot of whales through my travels. Each time is special. I have a great collection of what I call whale tails. These are images of the tails of whales as they expose them before a deep dive. Water pouting off of them and just incredible. This is a shot of a whale we were real close to in New Foundland. We were out on a Zodiac looking for whales and whales found us. I loved the grace of the image and the hump and curve of the whale as it swam next to us.
You Gotta Love A Good SAle
I travel a lot and one of my favorite things to do is to walk the city streets and do street photography. One of my favorite cities for doing this is Copenhagen. It’s a great city that is alive and offers amazing photo opps. This is a shot I made outside a store and shows their unique way of merchandising. I bet the sale they had was a big success. This is real block head marketing.
Another Building
I just loved the colors and everything about the side of this building. It was found at Olevetti quarry near Bloomington, IN.
Factory
I went for the monthly Sunday drive with Debra my companion in photography and more on Sunday and our goal was to find old Indiana Limestone quarries near Bloomington. Mission was a success but many were chained and blocked so we couldn’t get in. I did find some cool images though like the one above. We intend to call and get permission to shoot in a few of these places as the environment was image rich. We also decided to wait to cooler weather.
Second Beach
Along the Washington and Oregon coast lines there are some classic places to take magnificent images of the coast and stacks and crashing surf. One of the more iconic places is Second Beach in Olympic National Park. A little bit of a hike through a well marked trail deposits you at this super location. Sunset being the best time to be there. I wanted my images to be different than others I saw before of this location. This was shot with an IQ180 and then processed out with one exposure to six levels at one stop increments. So I had a 3 stop over and under and one normal from one shot. The Phase One camera takes an incredible image with 12 plus stops dynamic range. So in one image I was able to hold all details in highlights and shadows. It’s quite the moment when you look at the histogram of an image like this expecting clipping on highlights and shadows and the Phase One back shows a very nice histogram with toes at both ends. This allowed me to know I had the information to produce an image like this. Then using Photomatix I processed them together to make an HDR. I made adjustments so it didn’t appear to grungy or fake. I retained enough detail in the rocks but didn’t overdue it. I decided on a gold tone cast as that is how I remembered this image. After the image was processed and saved I opened it using NIK Viveza and did some desaturation in the clouds and darkened some corners. Finally I saved it, flattened it and then did a JPEG at a smaller dimension so I could post it on my blog and FaceBook. There were number of images from this one nights shoot that were keepers and this was one. I like the rock in the foreground and texture the water makes. Hope you enjoy it. This weekend I will make a 30×40 inch print.
