Lava Falls – Iceland

Hravnfossor Lava Falls - Iceland, 2013
Hravnfossor Lava Falls – Iceland, 2013

Iceland is an amazing place to photograph.  On my last trip to Iceland in March of 2013 I did a lot of large landscape images and much of it was black and white and stitched images making large panos.  These were made with a Phase One IQ180 so I had 80 megapixel images to work with.  The detail is amazing in these images.  I call the images immersive imaging.  What this means at least in my way of thinking is that when I make big print they draw a viewer in.  Many times I hang these large 4×9 foot images and watch as someone starts looking at it from 10 feet away.  Then something catches their eye and the next thing you know they are a foot away from the images discovering detail like they haven’t seen before in a photograph.

Water and Ice

Waterfalls in the Arctic
Waterfalls in the Arctic

Arriving at this location we faced a gigantic and very long glacier or ice wall.  It is actually part of the permanent ice pack on Svalbard.  zThere must have been a hundred waterfalls flowing from this place.  This one image is showing a waterfall of about 50 feet coming out of a glacier as water carves it way through the glaciers.  Some of the other waterfalls come of the top.  I have pictures of those too so you’ll see them somewhere along the way.  Pretty amazing to  see all of this.

Rickets Glen Falls

Rickets Glen, Pennsylvania
Rickets Glen, Pennsylvania

I have posted other images here of waterfalls. Seems I shoot a lots of them. I have also posted images from Rickets Glen here. This place is in Pennsylvania. Great place. There are around 27 falls along two different trails. So, it is a 2 or three day trip to get the images and do it right. This is one of the falls there. I may be tempted to drive back there again this year.

New Zealand Waterfall

A Magical Waterfall In New Zea
A Magical Waterfall In New Zea

I have been re-working some of my images using the update Capture One software 7.. I basically take images I worked on previously and run them back through the processor and they now come out even better.  This is one of those images.  It was shot on an IQ180 in New Zealand last December.  I love the greens and details I was able to pull out of this shot.  This was magical location.

New Zealand Snow and Falls

Earnslaw Burn, New Zealand
Earnslaw Burn, New Zealand

This image was made in December 2012 showing one of my favorite places on the planet, Erarnslaw Burn, New Zealand.  Very hard area to reach so it’s not visited by many.  Very magical as there are hundreds of waterfalls pouring off glaciers thousands of feet in the air.  Just to be present there is an incredible feeling.

Gullfoos

Gullfoss falls a bit differently
Gullfoss falls a bit differently

One of the major attraction in Iceland is Gullfoss which is a large really cool waterfall.  Typically when I travel and photograph in Iceland I like to go where others don’t go or at least try to see the place and image differently.  well Gullfoos is no different.  Buses of tourist show up here and most of the time we avoid this place like the plague.  But, we had sometime and decided to at least stop and admire this cool place.  I decided to try and shoot it differently .  I used my Olympus OMD5 and did a series of bracketed exposures and then worked them in post processing.  I ended up with a different kind of prehistoric gritty look.  Works for me.
