Jewels On The Beach
I am leading a workshop to Iceland in March. It’s the best time of year to visit Iceland. No tourists and you can see Iceland the way if should be seen. This photo of an iceberg on a beach is only a sample of what you would encounter. If interested click on the link here or contact me for more details. This was a short time exposure so the waves could blur just a little and capture the water as it runs off the shore. This is one of many beautiful images I shot on that beach this one day.
Polar Bear On Ice
I have had the chance to photograph Polar Bears several times and they are just magnificent animals. On one trip we pushed way far into the ice, turned the engines off and drifted for a few days and let the bears come to us. Sometimes we had a few bears around the ship. They were as curious as we were. This is a bear who was quite active. He was jumping between chunks of ice. Shot with a Nikon D800.
Iceland In The Winter
I know a lot of people like to sit on a beach in winter and go someplace war. Me, I love the cold places and you’ll find me in Antarctica and Iceland. This is the kind of image you can expect from Iceland in the winter. And, believe it or not, it’s not that cold. Iceland is best in winter and thus you get ice shots in Iceland. This is a pano made at one of the iceberg lagoons. There are a lot of other really incredible places in icealnd to be seen in winter. Imagine beautiful frozen waterfalls with gorgeous sunsets. If you are interested than consider traveling with me this MArch as I take photographers on an Icealnd Winter Workshop.
Blue Icebergs
There is so much to photograph in Antarctica. This image was made as we were cruising. I saw the grey sky and the blue of the icebergs as they floated in the sea. I must admit I saturated the blue a bit for effect but I like it and especially the way it contrasts with the background. This was shot with a long lens handheld from a moving ship. the Fuji XT-2 with the 100-400mm lens allowed me a long reach to get this image.
Antarctica Sunrises Never Disappoint
Antarctica In Black and White
Last year on my Antarctica visit I shot a lot of images as I usually do and when I came home I decided to try something new. I have been making a series of BW images from this amazing place. Here is the first of a week of Antarctica in BW.
Another Iceberg On The Beach
So, you may be wondering why I have been posting so many Iceland images. The simple reason is I am enjoying the holidays and during some spare time that I normally don’t have I’m revisiting a lot of the trips I did last year and finally re-working the and editing the images. Iceland was big trip. Lots of incredible images were taken. I have a lot from the helicopter which will soon grace these pages. This one was done on the famous iceberg beach. The challenge with the iceberg beach is shooting something different from the 1000’s of images that are shown from there. I don’t claim this is different, just something I liked. On the last trip I did many at this location using the iPhone so I could get something different. I’ll posts those someday too. This was shot with the Nikon D800e at 1.6 seconds.
Sunrise In Iceland
One of the things that is fun about Iceland is the unpredictable weather. When we woke up the morning that this image was taken it was raining hard and deep overcast, It’s one of those morning that would have been easy to say let’s go back to bed. The time was around 4AM. Being the adventurous photographer that we are we decided to go for it and drove the 20 minutes to the Jökulsárlón lagoon. If you have never heard of this place or visited it you are really missing an experience. I have visited this location numerous times and it has always yielded a special photograph. This morning was no different. The sun had come up behind the clouds and all of a sudden the clouds started to part and this amazing color came through. Contrasting with the blue of the icebergs I was able to get a number of nice images. This was one of them.
I’m Back, So Here We Go
I must apologize. No excuses, but I was super busy for the last few months on Luminous-LAndscape business. I literally was running out of hours in a day. So, I am now back and will do my best to get back to the routine of an image a day. Please accept my apologies for the long absence.
I’ll kick off the new images with a shot from last week when I was in Iceland leading workshop. It was a great workshop with some great people. The light lasted 24 hours a day and it was non-stop photography. One morning we woke up and it was grey and cloudy but none the less we headed to the Iceberg Lagoon to shoot sunrise. As it is with Iceland weather the whole grey sky changed in the 10 minute drive there. The clouds started to part and beautiful gold sun started to peak through. This is the shot of an iceberg with the sun common up. Oh my do I love Iceland. Made with a Nikon D800e and a 70-200mm lens.
