One of the coolest places to visit in Antarctica is Deception Bay. You have to go through this narrow channel to get there and you basically go inside what was once a volcano. Now it is a giant bay and years ago whalers used this area as a place to harvest their whale catch. There are stories that there was so much blood from butchering the whales that the whole bay turned red now it is long abandoned, There was a volcanic eruption not too long ago and much is buried. What you can’t bury are these rusted old whale oil tanks. I love rust and including them in this landscape.

Wall Of Ice
There is no experience that comes close to the travels in Antarctica. For example todays image above was made as our expedition ship cruised within 20 feet of a massive iceberg. I just point my camera towards the iceberg and got shots like you see above. Incredible design and you could see where melting and freezing played a part in making htis very unique.
Twilight Down South
At certain times of year in Antarctica the days are very long. There are sunsets that blend into sunrises. There is color and beauty that you can only see at the bottom of the world. This is one of those typical sunset – sunrises. I am so looking forward to visiting there again later this year. For now it is off to Australia in a few days for what promises to be a great 2 weeks of photography.
The Gullett
Wow, I have been re-cataloging my images and also re-working them in the NEW Capture One 7 software by Phase One. here is another Antarctica PANO. This was one of my most amazing days alive. Words can’t describe the beauty of this day and location.
Side Of An Iceberg
Ever wonder what the side of a giant 50 foot high iceberg looks like? Well here it is. Traveling in Antarctica we convinced our captain of the boat we were cruising on the get us as close to cool icebergs as he cold. He was more than happy to help us. This is the side of an iceberg and it is just beautiful with the color and things happening. You can see melting, re-freezing and a gorgeous random texture. This was shot from around 50 feet away using a 70-200mm zoom on a Canon 5dII.
Seal and Iceberg
One more image from today’s image edit session. While cruising on a Zodiac around the Iceberg Graveyard we happened to spy a leopard seal. Nasty animals. As we cruise by his iceberg island I saw another Iceberg in the distance. I waited for the shot to line up and bang, I got it.
Berg
I usually can be found editing my images with coffee or wine. Today I had my coffee going through some of my Antarctica images. I have been cataloging my past work using CApture One 7 a cool program by Phase One. I found this image in my search and have a bunch more I am working on. I kept coming back to this one though because it just seems to work. Once I cropped to almost square it even worked better. I really do love Antarctica.
Lonely Penguin
I love penguins, who doesn’t? This image was made in Antarctica on an island. There was just this one lost should penguin taking a walk. Kind of gives a feel for the loneliness of the place and the beauty.
It’s Ice Time
For the next few days I’ll be posting images from my previous three trips to Antarctica. It’s the ultimate adventure and I will be making a trip there in 2013 and 2014. People ask if there is one place I like the most in all my travels where would it be. Simple answer – Antarctica. There is truly no place like it anywhere. The images I have taken there and sites I have seen will be with me to the day I die. Truly an amazing place to visit. This shot was made in the Gullet. Usually Ice choked we were able to navigate it on one of the most incredible bright days and still days ever. The water was as smooth as a mirror. The sky a deep blue that was astonishing. And the ice and reflections were so fantastic. I will post more from the Gullet and elsewhere. Hope you enjoy this.
Need My Rust Fix
Every now and then I need a rust fix and this is as good as it gets. I have been re-woring many of my images in my spare time and I just love the way this one looks. It was shot with a Phase One camera so detail and dynamic range are exceptional. It is a shot of a tank like vehicle used in Antarctica to get around in the snow. For some reason Antarctica environment makes the best rust. I just love the geometry and color of this shot.
