Luminous-Landscape Iceland Workshop Day 2

Absolutely amazing is all I can say for the last 48 hours.  I have been to Iceland dozens of times and I can’t remember the last time I shot so much in such a short period.  Weather helps and we have been blessed with great weather.  All that is supposed to change by tomorrow. We did an ice cave, glacier walk, glacier canyon, and more bergs on the beach.  The group is small and allows us to do more together as a group.  Great people with us on this trip.  Lots of fun.  More tomorrow.

Because someone asked.  All images have been shot on a Sony a7r II with various G-Master lenses.

Starting My Trip In Iceland

I’m starting a 12 day workshop in Iceland. It’s a smaller workshop than many I have done. Good for Daniel and me as we can work closer with clients. My goal is to make Iceland look different than all the tourist and iconic images being made my a ton of tourists. So today I took images of the Sun Sculpture and created these. Part of my Being Square – Seeing Double series. And there were a ton of tourists there so this was one way to work around them.

Iceland This Saturday

I’m not sure why, but every time I prepare to go to Iceland I get excited.  I have been to Iceland dozens of times.  Photographed just about every location there is and watched the country change over the last 14 years.  It used to be you could go anywhere in Iceland and not see a soul.  You could be the only photographer on a beach or at a waterfall.  Well, these days there are tour buses and lots of Asian tourists that have no regard for anyone else or even the landscape they are fortunate enough to see.  And, there are other photographers too who will walk right into your shot with no regard for anyone else.  Yes, this happens everywhere and not just Iceland.  Kind of a sign of the time.  So, I have decided that this year is the last year I will go to Iceland for a while.  It’s time to explore other areas and there are plenty of them.  I plan to have a good time this trip and then again this summer.  We have god groups put together for each trip, I am going to try to do a lot of long exposure work and hopefully catch some northern lights night like we had in Norway.  So, stay tuned and I’ll share images as I go.

I Love Iceland In The Winter

As you read from my previous post I’m heading to Iceland next weekend.  It’s a great time of year to visit.  It’s the end of winter and days are getting longer but it is still cold and should have snow.  And, most important is it a time where a lot less tourists visit.  I have a small group this year and we will travel around the whole Island shooting all the best locations.  I can’t wait.  I’ll have a lot to share on my return.  Hope you like today’s image.

Little Waterfall – Part of A Big Waterfall

I was in Iceland shoot a very big waterfall.  I love waterfalls and I am sure by now you know how much I love Iceland.  After I shot the bigger waterfall I but my long lens on the Fuji-Xt2.  It has the reach of a 600mm lens on a full frame camera.  I started to explore at the longest focal lengths different parts of the waterfall.  I used a 1/2 to 1-second exposure to shoot what I found.  This was one of those shots.

Jewels On The Beach

I am leading a workshop to Iceland in March.  It’s the best time of year to visit Iceland.  No tourists and you can see Iceland the way if should be seen.  This photo of an iceberg on a beach is only a sample of what you would encounter.  If interested click on the link here or contact me for more details. This was a short time exposure so the waves could blur just a little and capture the water as it runs off the shore.  This is one of many beautiful images I shot on that beach this one day.

Big Ass Waterfall

One thing that I never get tired of in Iceland is waterfalls.  I know some people do as there is a waterfall around every turn.  You could go nuts shooting waterfalls in Iceland.   This waterfall, Gullfoss has so much water running over it is staggering.  Where does it all come from?  Rather than shoot the falls like everyone else and tried to fit this mammoth waterfall into the frame I put on my 400mm lens and shot the falls in close.  I also tried various shutter speeds until I found one that gave the falls just the right look.  Not too velvety and not to definitive.  I liked the way this turned out.

Dried Iceland Mud

I know it’s a strange thing to say, but Iceland has the nicest mud. This image was made in a geothermal field in Iceland.  As I was walking around this giant area that had bubbling hot springs with bubbling mud I came across dried out areas.  The mud had dried and cracked. It looked so pretty so I did a series of images.  This is one of them.  Kind of abstract but not.  I liked it and hope you do.
