As you amy know I am still in Death Valley just wrapping up the Phase One PODAS workshop. Check out the PODAS BLOG to see a log and photos of the trip. Yesterday when driving some of the group back to the airport I had to pull over to shoot this. Amazing skies yesterday, storms, and just beautiful no matter where you looked. Much more coming.

It Sometimes All Goes Great
This week I am in Death Valley leading a Phase One PODAS photo workshop. We have had non-stop days and incredible good luck with our photo excursions. Tonight was no exception. We were coming back from an afternoon of photography in Rhyolite and Beatty when a front started to move in. We quickly hustled our way over the mountain pass and set up at the top of valley. Our view encompassed Death Valley and as you can see from the photo the light and clouds were exceptional. I love it when a plan all comes together. Tonight was one of those nights that defined why we love taking photos so much.
Death Valley – Race Track
Quick entry as I am in Death Valley leading a Phase One PODAS workshop. It is a great group of people and we are doing a ton of photography. On Monday we visited the Race Track. More on this great place in future blogs. But for today enjoy the photograph. Please excuse me though for the shortness of this as I need to be up in four hours so we photograph the dunes. More soon.
Sunrise Death Valley
Somedays you just hit it right. Today started off as a beautiful day in Death Valley. Great light and clouds. Then it just became windy and I mean thundering windy. It’s like standing in a giant hair dryer. The valley was covered in dust storms as far as you could see. Death Valley is apparently famous for this wind and heat. Anyway I am not big into sunrises like this but today is an exception.
Death Valley – Wall
Back to the blog after a few days of traveling and having some surgery. I had a bit of basil cell cancer removed from my face and thought it would be a cake walk but by the time I was through, I now have like 30 stitches on my face. I am told the scar won’t be bad. At my age a few scars are good to have.
The photo today was taken in Death Valley. There is an old abandoned Borax mine in Death Valley junction that I had a blast shooting at. This is a shot taken with a Phase One P65 and then played with a bit on the iPad. I like the whole feel.
Speaking of Death Valley, I am leading a workshop there in April. Visit www.phaseone.com/podas for details.
Death Valley Junction
One of my favorite places to do photography is Death Valley. It is a most remarkable place with a ton of things to photograph. As you know if you are a regular reader I am a big fan of rust and decay and I was fortunate to find this old Borax mine in Death Valley Junction. This locations is about 45 minutes from the park itself. I played with this image by shooting it with a P65+ then importing into my iPhone where I applied some effects then took it back to Capture One for some more adjustments. Just a little fun with an interesting image.
Pan Head Billy
This photo is one of those photos that just happens. I was shooting around Artists Palette in Death Valley and there was this guy leaning against his motorcycle admiring the light on the mountain. I took a shot and the original photo was of his back. Well, I decided to go up and talk to this guy. He was a fascinating guy and had been on the road for 17 years. His nick name was “Pan Head Billy”. As the light started to diminish and turn golden I asked if he would mind posing. So he took this pose and I took the shot. The detail on this image shows all his belongings he carries with him, his ruggedness and confidence. I put the image in my gallery and one day was messing with it on some of the apps I had and ended up with this. Hope you enjoy it.
