I have visited Scotland a few times while running photo workshops there. It’s an amzingly beautiful country with all sorts of photographic surprises. One plave that I alwasy visit is Castle Eilean Donan. No matter what time of day you go you can find good shots. During the day though you may find too many tourists. I like to shoot at dawn and dusk. This is one image of the castle I really like.

Castle Walk
While in Cornwall, UK last week I saw many cool sites as well as many castles. This castle is St. Michael’s Mount in the village of Marazion. At low tide you can walk and drive out the island. At hight tide you need to take a boat. Pretty cool and medieval.
Castle Stalker
Scotland – land of the castle. This image is of the famous Castle Stalker. I have shot this castle at different times of the day and with different tides. This image was made late afternoon at low tide.
Scotland Land Of The Castle
One thing I loved about Scotland is the castles. They were everywhere. Seems back in the olden days you had to make sure you could defend your home from nasty neighbors. This castle sits on an island and can only e reached by boat at high tide. Otherwise it is just mud at low tide. There was a small road that became visible at low tide leading to the castle. We lucked out though as we photographed here twice and spectacular sunsets each time. The hard part is keeping detail in the castle while not burning out the sky. I’ll teach you how that is done if you attend one of or LuLa workshops.
Eilean Donan Castle
It’s kind of a touristy trap place, but if you can get the people out of the picture it is a beautiful castle to take a picture of. Seems Scotland just has an abundance of castles This one is exceptional and built on an island like so many other Scottish castles. I have more of this castle and others I’ll be publishing over the coming weeks. This was made with the Olympus OMD 5.
Stalker Castle
I shot most of my images with the Phase One camera and digital back. However, I do have a few other cameras that I carry with me not to mention my trusty iPhone. This image was made on the Olympus OMD 5 using the dramatic art effect. I really liked it so I thought it would be fun to share. This is shot in Scotland at Castle Stalker.
Castle Stalker
Last evening we took the group to Castle Stalker and stayed there until after sunset. And, oh what a sunset it was. It lasted a while and transformed itself every few minutes Hard to decide what shots to choose. Shoot with the Phase One IQ 180 and then processed in capture one. Was bale to still hold detail in the castle while keeping the intensity of the sunset. Good tools for great images. More to come.
Scotland Castles
Scotland is turning out to be a photographic gold mine. So many beautiful places to take pictures of. The schedule for locations to visit over the next 7 days is amazing. I hope to be posting a new image each day from this trip. This a shot of the Eilean Donan Castle. It is a classic castle with bridge, old stone and sitting on an island. I shot this castle from many viewpoints. You may see more. But, this image I like because of the rock with a bird in the foreground and the colors. Stay tuned for more.
