Gullfoos

Gullfoss falls a bit differently
Gullfoss falls a bit differently

One of the major attraction in Iceland is Gullfoss which is a large really cool waterfall.  Typically when I travel and photograph in Iceland I like to go where others don’t go or at least try to see the place and image differently.  well Gullfoos is no different.  Buses of tourist show up here and most of the time we avoid this place like the plague.  But, we had sometime and decided to at least stop and admire this cool place.  I decided to try and shoot it differently .  I used my Olympus OMD5 and did a series of bracketed exposures and then worked them in post processing.  I ended up with a different kind of prehistoric gritty look.  Works for me.

Iceberg

Beached Iceberg, Iceland
Beached Iceberg, Iceland

It has been an overcast week in Iceland.  So, I have spent a lot of time working my images into black and white.  Here is a shot made on a beach that is full of icebergs  A very special and surreal place.  I wanted to show the surf and iceberg.  In color it just didn’t have any real definition.  But after I turned it into BW I was able to play with the image until I got the shot above.  I shot this with a Phase One IQ260 and a 240mm lens.

Off To Iceland Tomorrow

Waterfall, Iceland
Waterfall, Iceland

I am heading off to Iceland for my fourth trip tomorrow.  This is one of my favorite places to photograph.  As a fine art landscape photographer I know of no place that offers such stunning beauty no mater what season it is.  This trip will be nice as it is the first one where I won’t be going in summer months.  It will be cold, maybe snowy and best of all there will be darkness.  In June and during the summer there is 24 hours of light.  This also means I’ll be able to shoot the northern lights with the NEW Phase One IQ260 camera.  So stay tuned.  I”ll update the blog as often as internet connections allow.  This shot is from one of the many waterfalls that I converted to B&W.  After the many trips I have made there I try to make things look different.

Two Women And The Fog

Two Women Fade Into The Fog, China
Two Women Fade Into The Fog, China

So while we were on top of this mountain in China I looked down the road and saw these two figures emerging from the fog.  I started shooting them.  They then stopped by a small pond and started to rake some items out of the pond and put these items in they baskets.  They then continued walking.  This shot was made as they began to disappear in the fog the same way they came out of the fog.

Lonely Tree

Tree, Fog and Field, China
Tree, Fog and Field, China

The last few weeks I have been in China leading a PODAS workshop.  Interesting are to photography.  Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate much and we were stuck in the thickest fog I have ever seen.  Actually we were in cloud as we were very high up on a Mountain in the  Yusmnyang area of Southwest China.  Never the less every now and then the fog would clear a bit and present some amazing images.  This si a shot of a lonely tree with terraced fields in front as the fog opened up for just one minute.  I opted for grain and BW to give more of the mood to the image.

You Gotta Get Up Early

The Bean, Chicago

You have to get up early to do great photography, and that is no different when shooting in the city and trying to make sure tourists don’t ruin your shot.  This is the famous Chicago Bean.  It offers a multitude of image possibilities with all the reflections and such.  Normally during the day there are always hundreds of people with their point and shoots taking shots.  So, get there early when the sun is coming up and have the whole place to your self.

Another Waterfall

Waterfall, Iceland

Well get used to it, you re going to see a lot of waterfalls and ice pictures in the coming weeks.  I worked on this image and feel it really popped in black and white. This is one of many waterfalls shot in Iceland.  I opted in this case not to slow the water down too much as I wanted to illustrate the force of the water coming off the falls and through gorge.

Today It’s Rocks

Rock Formation, Big Bend, TX

After posting a very popular image from yesterday of an Iceberg, I though I would go another direction and put up some cool rocks.  There were shot in Big Bend National park an number of years ago.  There were some great formations there.  I likes the way the rooks seemed to be piled as if god was just having fun stacking them in certain spots.  This formation I like with the sky, shadow and look.
