Rainbow In Iceland

Rainbow In Iceland
Rainbow In Iceland

Sometimes magic happens and it often does when in Iceland.  I sometimes think Iceland was created just for photographers as it is one of the most incredible landscapes in the world and I have seen a lot of them.  It was around 10:30 at night and the sun was low on the horizon.  We were shooting this really nice lake with dark stones and solid white patches of snow.  We then looked far off and saw this rainbow forming.  It got larger and larger and brighter too.  I put on my long lens with a polarizer and started shooting.  Finally I backed off on the zoom a bit and got this image that I really like.

Amazing Clouds

fb-Drama-sky-2_Panorama1-vivOn our recent Iceland trip we were on our way to the Highlands and like it happens often in Iceland the weather was changing rapidly.  Weather in Iceland can change in minutes and it is not uncommon that in one day you cane experience everything Iceland has to offer.  So, while we were driving we watched the sky change in front of us.  Weather systems were colliding and as a result the clouds just became incredible looking and it was sight you don’t see often.  This i,age is a stitched image made handheld in a very quick set up.

Iceland Delta

River Delta from the air in Iceland
River Delta from the air in Iceland

On our trip last week to Iceland we chartered a helicopter.  Iceland from the air is a whole other world.  We were able to open the door and the pilot did a great job getting us to the good locations.  I think he has done this before.  One of the things that becomes obvious quickly is the abstract of the landscape.  This is a shot done of a river delta and the muddy waters.  without a reference you wouldn’t know what you were looking at.  Made with the Nikon D800E with a 24-70mm lens at 1600th of a sec.

I’m Back, So Here We Go

Sunrise At The Iceberg Lagoon, Iceland
Sunrise At The Iceberg Lagoon, Iceland

I must apologize.  No excuses, but I was super busy for the last few months on Luminous-LAndscape business.  I literally was running out of hours in a day.  So, I am now back and will do my best to get back to the routine of an image a day.   Please accept my apologies for the long absence.

I’ll kick off the new images with a shot from last week when I was in Iceland leading  workshop.  It was a great workshop with some great people.  The light lasted 24 hours a day and it was non-stop photography.  One morning we woke up and it was grey and cloudy but none the less we headed to the Iceberg Lagoon to shoot sunrise.  As it is with Iceland weather the whole grey sky changed in the 10 minute drive there.  The clouds started to part and beautiful gold sun started to peak through.  This is the shot of an iceberg with the sun common up.  Oh my do I love Iceland.  Made with a Nikon D800e and a 70-200mm lens.

One of the places almost everyone who visits the Antarctica Peninsula visits is the Lemaire Channel.  This is narrow channel with huge cliffs and mountains rising from either side.  It has never disappointed me on any of my visits.  On my last trip I wanted to show the channel in a different way.  So, once we were in the middle of the channel I shot 12 exposure while panning the camera from a moving ship.  I later stitched these together in Photoshop.  This is the result where you can see both openings of the channel.  I am presenting a Color and BW version for your viewing pleasure.

I have been playing wit this image for a while.  This a shot of a ship that was wrecked or beached in Svalbard, Norway.  It has all the things I like, decay and rust in a beautiful setting.  I shot it at the angle I did to utilize the lines of the boat in the composition.  This was made with a Nikon d*00e and a 24-70mm lens.

Hard to believe that a week ago I was in winter clothing exploring the northern polar regions of Svalbard, Norway.  What an amazing trip and I worked with two different groups of the nicest people on the the trip.  I was an instructor along with Peter Cox for the Luminous-landscape – Rockhopper Workshops my day job.  We saw amazing sights as well as some real up close encounters with wildlife.  On our last day we found 2 Arctic foxes playing and we were able to shoot hundreds of images.  This is one of my favorites.  It just draws you in.  Shot with a Nikon D800e and the new Tamron 150-600mm lens.  I can’t wait to make a print of this one.
