Photography, Techniques and Whereabouts of Kevin Raber
A few posts back I published an image of the Bean in Chicago. I was there on a walk about with my son Scott. I was looking to see and shoot something different and I asked Scott to pose. Here is the result. Kind of different and I toned the image a sepia color to add to the image overall. I like it and it makes you stop and look.
I’ll switch gears from my typical landscape images and return to my rust and decay series. This is a shot of a handle on a boxcar at a railroad yard. I liked the color and geometry as well as the hint of rust.
I love Iceland. If that is not obvious from previous posts I don’t know what is. This is another Iceland shot made with the IQ260 and the 240mm lens. It has layers and a great feel to it. I just love it.
When I shoot somewhere I always try to se things different and avoid trying to shoot postcard type images. This is a classic landscape image. It includes a good foreground, sunset and a beautiful landscape. This was made in Monument VAlley and shot with a Phase One IQ180 at sunset. Gotta love the dynamic range.
This image was made in December 2012 showing one of my favorite places on the planet, Erarnslaw Burn, New Zealand. Very hard area to reach so it’s not visited by many. Very magical as there are hundreds of waterfalls pouring off glaciers thousands of feet in the air. Just to be present there is an incredible feeling.
I love Chicago. So much to do and as a photographer, I love wandering the streets doing street photography as we would call it. Earlier this week I wandered the streets with my son Scott. We met for breakfast but did a walk about first. We ended up at the famous Chicago Bean. Now, this location is iconic and everyone comes here and shoots this massive reflective bean. I love coming to these places and challenging myself to see differently. THus the shot above. If you look and play you can come up with an image that not many others may have. It helped too that is was early and not too many people were there. We actually had the bean to ourselves. Made with a Fuji X-Pro and 18-55mm lens.
One of the major attraction in Iceland is Gullfoss which is a large really cool waterfall. Typically when I travel and photograph in Iceland I like to go where others don’t go or at least try to see the place and image differently. well Gullfoos is no different. Buses of tourist show up here and most of the time we avoid this place like the plague. But, we had sometime and decided to at least stop and admire this cool place. I decided to try and shoot it differently . I used my Olympus OMD5 and did a series of bracketed exposures and then worked them in post processing. I ended up with a different kind of prehistoric gritty look. Works for me.
Staying with my style from this trip to Iceland I am staying with BW images. This was shot with a 55mm lens on a Phase One DF+ with an IQ260 digital back. I converted it to BW in post processing.
This image was made on another cold and windy evening. The sky was so dramatic. The surf was crashing all around us. I waited and then took a long exposure of the scene to blur our and smooth the water. The shot in color was just to blue and grey from the mist and no light. So I converted it to black and white and it worked great. Shot with a Phase One IQ260 and 55mm lens 40 seconds.
It has been an overcast week in Iceland. So, I have spent a lot of time working my images into black and white. Here is a shot made on a beach that is full of icebergs A very special and surreal place. I wanted to show the surf and iceberg. In color it just didn’t have any real definition. But after I turned it into BW I was able to play with the image until I got the shot above. I shot this with a Phase One IQ260 and a 240mm lens.
