I’m leaving today to go as far north as possible, Svalbard, Norway. I’ll be leading 2 back to back Rockhopper Workshop tours into the Polar ice and Svalbard area to photograph Polar Bears, Reindeer, Arctic Fox and other wildlife plus some great landscapes including some amazing glaciers. I won’t be back until July 31st and will have no internet. I’ll definitely suffer internet withdrawal but I should be OK. If we do get any signal I’ll put up a post. Otherwise see you back here on the 31st. Maybe I’ll even find Santa Claus.
Cypress Trees Tuscany
Yes this shot is pretty iconic but I like it and wanted to share it. These are the famous Cypress Trees in Tuscany. As you are diving down the road you’ll always find a few cars pulled off at this location shooting these trees. The key is getting good light and a good sky. I have shot this location in complete fog, sunrise and sunset. Each time I come away with some nice images. This is just a nice feel good spot.
Magical Bryce
Bryce National PArk is a rather small park but certainly offers up some spectacular sights. As with all National Parks I visit, I love the beauty of them but as a photographer I get frustrated with the clichéd feeling of pictures. Certainly it is great to be able to take a photo from the same location many famous landscape photographers have made their images. So, when I find myself shooting at the locations I do everything I can to get something different. Something that is from a new angle, with a different lens or different lighting. If I can walk away with a different but still recognizable image then I have accomplished part of my mission. This image was made at Bryce but done with a long lens and isolates a certain part of the Hoodoos. Light also played a factor in this image giving the hillside I was shooting a very special glow.
Happy 4th Of July
The fourth of July in America is a time for celebration, parades and cook outs. I plan to them all today and celebrate at the end with fireworks over Indianapolis. This image was made last year at the Carmel, IN fireworks.
Big Valve
The Buffalo Water Works just keeps on giving. I am really looking forward to shooting at this location again. It was quite a remarkable place and today I present another image from my series. This one I like because it looks so industrial. The giant valve and gear driven wheel at the top and add the rust and it just works. The separation from the background works because of this beautiful gentle light that was coming from the skylights.
Sunset – Broome, Australia
At Luminous-Landscape we just announce a new workshop to explore the Kimberley region of Australia on the Tue North, a magnificent yacht with a a helicopter. We also just release a VIDEO of this amazing location and previous trip. Check out the links. And, please consider joining us for a great adventure.
Old Rails
While shooting at Silo City in Buffalo Michael and I were standing on top of one of the silos and I saw this shot. The silos were a major distribution point for grain to be transported by rail to the east coast. This is a shot of the rail yard all grown over.
Really Heavy Metal
This is another shot from the Buffalo Water Works. This amazing place has really drawn my creative side to the surface. I have worked these images to give a certain look. Harsh, contrasty, gritty with a heavy feeling. Everything in this building was meant to last 1000 years. You can feel the weight in this shot.
The Beauty
While shooting at Silo City, Buffalo NY, we had the opportunity to shoot some models in the environment there. This is one I did with heavy backlighting. I actually had fun doing this and may start shooting more people as a result. It’s been a while since I have photographed people.
The Beast
This is an image made inside the Water Works building in Buffalo, NY. It was part of the weekend we were in Buffalo shooting abandoned grain silos. I used a slight HDR enhancement to give it the gritty machine look.
