The Crump

FB_DSC1920-columbuse--2-grump-nik_tonemappedOn some Sundays Debra and I get in the car and go somewhere.  On one particular Sunday we headed to Columbus, IN because this small city has some amazing architecture.  We did a good day of shooting there and as alway had a  good time.  This image was of an old theater entrance in town called the Crump.  Did many images of this building and it has all sort of potential for interesting images.  During my morning coffee I decided to mess with color and texture.  This is one of the results.  Shot with the Sony a7r II.

Ghosts Of Silo City

Ghosts Of Silo City
Ghosts Of Silo City

I have photographed on two occasion at the Silo City complex in Buffalo , NY.  It’s a large are with abandoned grain silos.  Giant structures with all sort of interesting things to photograph.  On my last trip another photographer and myself hired a couple of models and attempted to put the human figure into the landscape of these old building.  It was a lot of fun and I took a ton of good images but only felt these dreamy ones worked out.  Here is an image I call Ghosts Of Silo City.

The Carmel Performing Arts Center

The Perfroming Arts Center, Carmel, IN

This has been a fun week of photography.  I have had the chance to use the finest camera in the world as well as photographing in some of the best buildings in Indianapolis.  The image above was shot at the Carmel Performing Arts Center with the NEW Phase One 100MP camera on an ALPA camera with a 23mm lens.  This a rather interesting rig to shoot with.  I tethered the camera to a Mac laptop and individually fine tuned the images as it was taken.  This is an unusual shot as it shows the whole concert hall from the stage floor to the ceiling.  The detail in this image is incredible.

Doing It The Hard Way

The Scottish Rites Cathedral, Indianapolis, IN
The Scottish Rites Cathedral, Indianapolis, IN

I grew up using view cameras and taking a long time to compose and shoot an image.  For a good part of my career I worked for Phase One a camera and digital back company making the best cameras in the world.  While at Phase One I shot many great photos and was patient doing my images.  It took a while to compose images and shoot with a Phase One system.  After leaving Phase One and joining Luminous-Landscape I have had the chance to shoot with almost every camera made.  I love the freedom the 11 frames per second and how fast I can see a shot and take it.  This past week I was shooting with the new Phase One 100 mega pixel that is on loan to me for a while.  I put the back on my ALPA technical camera system and went to shoot at two venues in Indianapolis.  I did this with friend and fellow photographer Chris Barrett from Chicago a notable interior and architectural photographer.  I had all these plans to shoot a number of different location but it just didn’t happen.  It took time to set up the shot and take it.  Some exposures were more than three minutes.  The image above was made at the Scottish Rites Cathedral in Indianapolis and took two hours to shoot plus some more work in post processing.  The detail in this image is amazing.  Hope you can at least enjoy it at the size above.

Happy New Year

Chicago
Chicago

I hope you had a safe and happy New Years eve.  I had a nice dinner out then a quiet celebration at home with Debra and my son Scott who is visiting for the holidays.  Today will be a day and as matter of fact the next few days of testing a number of new cameras that have come my way.  I’ll be finishing up a review of the DP Quatrro O, RX100iv, Sony A7s II.  I’m starting reviews on the Leica SL, Sony RX100rII and two top secret cameras.  Never a dull moment.

Today image is an architectural abstract.  This was made in Chicago and done on an iPhone.  I challenged myself on one of my morning walks to shoot only with the iPhone and this is one of the many nice images I captured that morning.
