The coastline of washington state is very beautiful. Much of it in the northern part of the state is part of the Olympic National Park. This is a shot done from one of the beaches. I believe this is Ruby beach. This past weekend when I was there it was raining and foggy for most of the time. I did get one good hour though and this is the shot. I am going to resurrect a shot done a few years ago and post it tomorrow from third beach. Stay tuned for that.

Another Olympic National Park Tree
After my brief and fat trip through Olympic National Park I came away thinking that this place has the coolest trees. This is another moss covered tree. The light was hitting it just right. Finding these trees is like hunting. You walk through a wooded area looking for a good tree and good light and hope you find them both at the same time. I was lucky on this one and the fallen the on the ground also helps set a horizontal line in the shot. I like it.
Olympic Falls
I have been doing scouting for an upcoming workshop for PODAS in the fall this weekend. I have traveled most of Olympic National Park in a fast find and time it trip. This means I drive the routes we will take and time the drives so we can fit these excursions into what is a usually tight PODAS workshop schedule. I did find some time to make some exposures. Here’s one of some waterfalls near Lake Quinault. More to come. Heading back to Seattle today and then home on Tuesday for a few days before heading off to Denmark. It’s going to be a very year of travel and picture taking.
New Tree – ONP
I am getting excited about the possibilities for a workshop in Olympic National Park (ONP). Even though is has been a lousy few days of weather, I managed to get some shots in today. You’ll see some more in the coming days. I plan on doing a PODAS workshop in ONP this fall – early September. I’ll keep you posted on when. This tree was in a meadow near Lake Quinault. It works because the mountains in the background were cloud covered and the light was just a lovely diffused light. I shot some cool waterfall images too.
Merry Christmas – Delicate LIght
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.
I’ll keep this entry short as there is so much to do to get ready for the Raber Christmas Morning. All of my boys are here with one wife and one significant other. Going to be a fun day. After gifts and a brunch I will start preparing the traditional (Raber) dinner of Beef Wellingtom, Potatoes, Waldorf Salad, String Bean Almonde, with a beautiful chocolate chip cake for dessert.
Todays picture was made in the Olympic National Park which is just beautiful. Deep in the woods I found this tree and it was catching just a hint of the sunlight coming through. Simple and works. Shot with a Phase One P65+
Another Hot Day In Indy – Cool Day In The Forrest
I am trying to think of the right adjective to describe just how hot it is in Indy, so insert your own. It’s XXXXXXX HOT!. I don’t do good in heat above 80 degrees. Maybe why I like colder climates like Antarctica and the mountains so much. It looks like we are in for record-breaking hots days for the for the next week. Air conditioners can’t even keep up. So, I thought we should venture into the woods and view some cool waterfalls for today. This image was shot in Olympic National Park and it just feels cool. I feel better when I look at it, hope you do too.
Olympic National Park
Every year I spend a week with a group of fellow photographers and friends. We go to a special location, shoot a lot of photos, talk photography and drink fine wine. Last year we visited Olympic National park and had perfect weather and shot lots of good images. One evening were photographing the sunset on the Pacific Ocean and it was tough scene. It was a classic case where HDR was needed. But to shoot multiple exposures with water that is in continuous motion is near impossible. Lucky for me I was shooting with a Phase One P65+ and this amazing camera has a huge dynamic range. So what I did was find an exposure I like, processed it out by setting exposure sliders in capture One to 2 stops over and 2 stops under and then normal. I took the three images and used Photomatix to handle the HDR. I made several varieties of HDR some very natural looking and a few like this are best described as nuclear. So, enjoy my nuclear sunset.
TREE
Yes, this is a tree with a bit of fun thrown in. This was shot on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park in Washington. The trees are very wind blown on the ridge and the weather wears them down to very interesting and twisted objects. I have playing with taking images and flipping them to see how they work. This I think works very nicely. The shot was made with a wide angle lens to accentuate the look. Then flipped in post processing and tinted.
Funky Saturday
I thought I’d put something different up today. Just that kind of the mood I am in. This is a landscape done on a beach near Olympic National Park. It was shot with a Phase One P65+ and then worked as an HDR from one exposure. The Phase One camera gives you close to 15 stops dynamic range so I was able to under and over process by two stops with ease. Brought the images together in PhotoMatix and at that point the image looked very nice. As a matter of fact I have some large size wall shots that look great. I had the images in my iphone gallery and was on the plane ride back from Australia and was messing with images in Picture Show app and this one came out. So, here it is.
Waterfalls Again – Kind Of
Every year in the spring I set out on a photo trip with around 8 of my very closest photographer friends. It’s quite an ecliptic group and we have a lot of laughs drink a lot of wine eat well and more than anything else photograph a lot. Every year one of the guys is responsible for where we go. It’s not an easy job as this can be a very tough group to please. It was my responsibility this past year and we visited Olympic National Park in the state of Washington. We stayed at three different locations and we had one heck of a good time. Today’s photo was taken off the side of a dirt road someplace near the Hoh Rain Forrest.
