The Journey To New Zealand Begins

Ice and Glaciers at Mount Cook, New Zealand

I love going to all the great places that I can to photography.  What I don’t like is airports and airplanes and the process of getting there.  Today I start out my journey to New Zealand to host a Phase One PODAS workshop there.  I start my journey in Indinapolis and fly to Detroit, from there to Los Angeles and then to Sydney and from sydney to Queenstown, NZ.  That’s a lot of hours in planes and airports.  I have done it before and will do it many times again.  the iPad is loaded with books, magazines and TV shows I can catch up on.  I have special drugs mixed with a view glasses of wine that will make time travel faster.  And, fortunately I usually get off the plane and forget that I juts took the trip.  It’s all worth it especially in NZ because I’ll shoot so many great places.  So stay tuned, I’ll update the images here as often as I can.

Doesn’t Get Much Better

Ernslaw Burn, Before the shot, New Zealand

It’s Saturday and I usually spend a bit of time working on old images, sorting, cataloging etc.. Today I stumbled on this shot and then looked at some of the other images for this shoot. This was made on a New Zealand PODAS photography workshop I lead lead year. I am doing another this December CLCK HERE for info on it. One of the places we visit is Ernslaw Burn and it is only accessible by helicopter. It is truly one of those edge of the planes places. This is a shot of my ALPA with an IQ180 back set up on it about to shoot this massive area. I think we counted a total of 90 plus waterfalls coming off of glaciers a thousand feet high.  You should put it on your bucket list, better yet come with me this December

Ice and Glacier

Ice and Glacier, Mt Cook area, New Zealand

This is a cool image done while visiting the Mt Cook area in New Zealand.  We did a cruise in these Zodiac like boat and were able to get right up on mini icebergs which were breaking off the Glacier in the background.  I had fun trying to put both the iceberg and glacier in the same shot to show contract and such.  What do you think?

More Ice

Iceberg New Zealand

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

My first post of the new year and it is of ice, my new obsession, or so it seems.  Why am I fascinated by ice?  Because it is here today and gone tomorrow.  It’s not a cliche like so many images of the grand canyon.  Ice is in constant transition, usually the melting kind.  This little iceberg was shot in New Zealand.  I am sure that as the day went on it moved and melted and may have even turtled (which is roll over terms for icebergs).  I have lots of ice pictures and through out this year you will get to see even more.

Man In Window

Man In Window, Queenstown, New Zealand

I love doing what is called street photography.  This is a form of photography where you walk the streets and shoot pictures of things that are happening.   while in new Zealand I received a NEW Fuji x100 which is kind of the old classic rangefinder camera in digital.  This makes absolute no noise so it is easy to walk down the street and see something and shoot it with out a lot of fuss.  Here is one of the street shot images from Queenstown, NZ.  Just a man in the window with a glass of wine.

Ice and Ice

Ice, Near Mt Cook, New Zealand

Seems I am getting a reputation of being an ice photographer.  I really like ice.  Unlike other landscapes ICE melts.  So what you shoot today may not be there tomorrow.  I shot a load of nice ice images in New Zealand.  This one drew me in and I had the driver of the boat I was in drive around this mini iceberg until I found the right angle.  The day was heavy clouds and many people think you can’t shoot good images on cloudy day.  Quite the contrary.  See how the clouds add a dynamic to the image.  Over all I really like this shot.  Hope you do too.

Some More New Zealand Water and Trees

River, Rees Valley, New Zealand

I moved my New Zealand images over to my main work station yesterday and there is over 80 gigs of images.  Not hard to make this size file when you shoot with a Phase One IQ180 camera.  So now the editing begins and then the post on each image.  There are so many good ones.  So I think through the rest of the year I’ll plenty to share.  I have a ton of other images I haven’t posted here from Death Valley, Moab and other places.  So, there is not a lack of content.  Todays image was also shot in the Rees Valley of New Zealand.  We were driving up this dirt road that they call tracks in New Zealand and came across this river or very large stream.  Lots of rapids and mountains and greenish water.  So we all stopped and did pictures.  This is one of the images I made.  Like the vertical and horizontal movements happening as well as the rooks and tree.  Enjoy.

New Zealand Waterfall

Waterfall, Rees Valley, New Zealand

Hi, I am back to regular postings again.  after enduring 34 hours of travel time to get back from Australia and throwing in another 6 hours for the trip from New Zealand to Sydney I am happy to be home and in my own bed.  A 21 day trip is a long one but oh what a trip.  I have enough images from this trip and others this year to keep me extremely busy working on images and making prints.  So, there are plenty of images for my daily blog.  Today’s image was shot in the Rees Valley of New Zealand where many of the Lord of The Rings movies were made.  Small waterfall with trees.  Shot with a Phase One 80 megapixel IQ180 on an ALPA Camera.

Mt. Cook and Coming Home

Mt. Cook, Sunrise, New Zealand

Well as you may have noticed I have not been the dutiful in posting an image a day. One reason is that PODAS kept me me so busy there was no spare time. Also, internet connections have not been good. I have enough images to fill an album from this trip so once I am home the posting will continue in regularity. This image was taken at sunrise at Mount Cook, in New Zealand. Look more of Mt Cook, icebergs and beautiful landscapes. It has been a terrific trip,, I start home today leaving around 4PM for a flight to Sydney. Spend an overnight then travel for nearly 27 hours to get home. I start in Sydney fly to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Detroit and finally detroit to Indianapolis. That’s a lot of hours closed into a flying steel tube. I have an iPad filled with magazines, newspapers, and movies and shows. I’ll occupy myself and get through it. So starting next week the blog will be more regular, I’ll b home in my own bed and

is right around the corner. More later.
