The Dolomites in Italy is an amazing area for a wide range of photography. Majestic mountains, incredible sunrises and sunsets and beautiful villages tucked away in little mountain hideaways. This image was made at sunrise and the Phase One IQ 180 back allowed the wide dynamic range to be captured. What an amazing location!
If you want to visit some astounding locations for photography make a point to visit Moab, UT. From there it is a short drive to Arches National Park as well as Canyon lands. I could spend all day shooting in just a few locations there is so much to see. This image was made at dusk while there was still some snow on the ground. Shot with an IQ 180 digital back from Phase One the detail in it is shape from foreground to background.

I grew up using view cameras and taking a long time to compose and shoot an image. For a good part of my career I worked for Phase One a camera and digital back company making the best cameras in the world. While at Phase One I shot many great photos and was patient doing my images. It took a while to compose images and shoot with a Phase One system. After leaving Phase One and joining Luminous-Landscape I have had the chance to shoot with almost every camera made. I love the freedom the 11 frames per second and how fast I can see a shot and take it. This past week I was shooting with the new Phase One 100 mega pixel that is on loan to me for a while. I put the back on my ALPA technical camera system and went to shoot at two venues in Indianapolis. I did this with friend and fellow photographer Chris Barrett from Chicago a notable interior and architectural photographer. I had all these plans to shoot a number of different location but it just didn’t happen. It took time to set up the shot and take it. Some exposures were more than three minutes. The image above was made at the Scottish Rites Cathedral in Indianapolis and took two hours to shoot plus some more work in post processing. The detail in this image is amazing. One of the prettiest places I have visited in recent years is the Dolomites in Italy. There are so many beautiful landscapes to photograph. One morning w did a sunrise shoot along a road with this church and small village in the foreground. It was one of those grand sunrises as you can see.
I have been spending what little spare time I have organizing my photos from the last few years. It’s a mammoth task and one I say I will stay on top of from now on. Here’s to hoping I do. This is an image I found shot 2 years ago in New Zealand. This a tree that is photographed a lot. I guess because it sits out in this filed and a small pond by itself. Once again I saw it in B&W.
Iceland is a magical land with so much beauty, that as a photographer it’s hard not to take fantastic images. There are mountains, valleys, seascapes, glaciers, icebergs and the list goes on. What I like is waterfalls. There are hundreds and they are a lot of fun to photograph. There are waterfalls that will astound in you size and the amount of water flowing over them. This waterfall is one I found driving around Iceland and I stop by it each and every time I’m there. I have done panos here, had rain, snow and blue sky. This image is one I like because it has what I call the Iceland Sky. Gray and foreboding. I shot this at a 10th of a second and with a Phase One 28mm lens. Had to go to real low ISO as well as F/22 to get a slow enough shutter to blur the water. Because of the curved element of the lens I couldn’t use a ND filter. I have shot this at longer shutter speeds where the water really blurs and higher where it is frozen. This shutter speed is just right.

Scotland – land of the castle. This image is of the famous Castle Stalker. I have shot this castle at different times of the day and with different tides. This image was made late afternoon at low tide.
I love Chicago. It’s one of the best cities to do Street Photography. So much is happening everywhere you look. The Chicago River has a lot of traffic on it not to mention some great architecture on its shore. I like this shot as it is Chicago and the Chicago River.
There is no place with more finicky weather than Scotland and Ireland. when it is nasty it is just plain nasty but when it is nice you get the light that dreams are made of. This was made during a wonderful week of photography in Scotland. I am leading a workshop there this November with Steve Gosling and Joe Cornish who I consider to be some of the best landscape photographers there is.
