Everyone has photos of Antelope Canyon, Page, AZ. I wanted to try to make mine different. These slot canyons are all over the place in the Southwest but Antelope is one of the more famous. Quite an experience to visit. Hard to photograph because of the tourists and it is very dark. I used a P45+ from Phase One and some of my exposures were over 10 minutes long. Patience is needed to shoot successfully and what you see in the picture is not necessarily what you see in the viewfinder. This is one of the most see places.

Lower Antelope
Antelope Canyon is like a rite of passage for a photographer. So many have been there and they go just to say they did it. I am no exception, yet I think I go so I can get some magical different images. Antelope Canyon is not to far from Page Arizona. There is a lot of other cool stuff to shoot in the area but the slot canyons are the place that are truly special. This image was shot on a Phase One P45+ with a 2 minute exposure. The Phase One backs work great because they do long exposures so well. It is dark in the slot canyons and the backs also have a great dynamic range allowing you to capture highlight areas and shadow details. I may post another Antelope picture tomorrow.
Slot Canyons
Today’s image was made in Upper Antelope Canyon. I have a ton of images from these slot canyons and they are all very beautiful. This was shot with a Phase One p45+. Why is this different? The Phase One cameras allow you to shoot in an environment like this which by the way is pretty dark, and do long exposures. Add to this the ability to have a large dynamic range , meaning you can shoot on one exposure and get good details in highlights and shadows. You cannot do this most DSLR cameras out there. the p45+ allows for exposures up to one hour or more. Some of these shots I did of Antelope are up to 15 minutes. I’ll post more from these canyons over the coming months. Also what’s cool when photographing in these canyons is the yellow-ornage walls absorb light as light filter down allowing some of the light to turn a wonderful color blue. That is where the blue in the image comes from.
