A More Subtle Iceland

Vik Beach, Iceland
Vik Beach, Iceland

Yesterday I posted a dramatic moment in Iceland.  They can be that way sometimes there.  This image is a bit more typical of Iceland.  Made at Vik a black beach, it was done at dusk and the light was gray with a hint or color on the horizon.  The beach is very large and there is a nice surf that rushes up onto the stones of the beach.  By dragging the shutter I was able to get the magical look to the surf and a hint of movement in the clouds.  This is one of those images you need to see as a print.

Sunset Olympic National Park

Olympic National PArk Sunset
Olympic National Park Sunset

I enjoy photographing in Olympic National Park a lot.  There is so much to shoot there.  This image was made at the 2nd Beach location.  It’s a short walk through the woods that dumps you onto this wonderful beach.  Hang around for sunset and you’ll be treated to something special.  This is an image made with a Phase One IQ160 with an ALPA camera.  I did one exposure then processed it out at 2 stops over and under plus normal.  It was the taken into PhotoMatix and tone mapped.  What this does is recover the detail in highlights and shadows and then blends them together.  A bit surreal and real at the same time.

Lighthouse One

Lighthouse, Isle Of Skye
Lighthouse, Isle Of Skye

The trip Scotland has been so much fun.  If you ever travel to Isle Of Skye, bring good boots, waterproof pants and a good waterproof out shell.  There are not to many places you can have wind, rain, rainbows and sun all at the same time. You need to be ready for the changing environment.  This is a lighthouse that takes a while to reach by car but is really cool to shoot.  I decided to turn the image into Black and White as the scene hardly had any color in it.  This was shot with the Fuji X-T1 which I was using for the trip to write a story on.  In this shot I really like the balance of the sea to the land and the contrast of the shot.

One of the places almost everyone who visits the Antarctica Peninsula visits is the Lemaire Channel.  This is narrow channel with huge cliffs and mountains rising from either side.  It has never disappointed me on any of my visits.  On my last trip I wanted to show the channel in a different way.  So, once we were in the middle of the channel I shot 12 exposure while panning the camera from a moving ship.  I later stitched these together in Photoshop.  This is the result where you can see both openings of the channel.  I am presenting a Color and BW version for your viewing pleasure.

Sunsets The Theme Of The Week

Godrevy Lighthouse, Cornwall, UK
Godrevy Lighthouse, Cornwall, UK

Seems I am in a sunset these week.  I am in Cornwall and shooting a lot of images in a lot of places.  This image was made today at sunset.  Spent a good 2 hours shooting this lighthouse with various angles and shutter speeds.  This is a good idea of why I am having so much fun here.  Shot with an Olympus OMD EM-1.

Amazing Palouse Sunset

A 9 Image Stitch Sunset In The Palouse
A 9 Image Stitch Sunset In The Palouse

Posts have been nonexistent over the last few days as internet has been super slow where I was, qw well as being busy from sunrise to sunset with the workshop.  Today I head back to Indianapolis and kick into catch up mode.  Lots or entries to post, images to work on and articles to finish.  I’ll be home for a few weeks before heading off to Photokina.  This image above was made a few nights ago at a sunset with a storm on the horizon.  The location is one of many I have marked in the Palouse.  It was beautiful way to close out a long day.  It was a 9 image stitch.

On The Way Home

Beautiful Iceberg, 24 hours of light, Svalbard, Norway
Beautiful Iceberg, 24 hours of light, Svalbard, Norway

I am now in Oslo, Norway about to start the second leg of my journey back to home to Indianapolis. I have been away for 3 weeks and 16 of those days have been at sea leading two amazing photo workshops in the Arctic region of Svlabard, Norway.  This was my second trip to Svalbard and it won’t be my last.  I got to share this trip with some amazing people and take so many amazing images.  We have polar bear pictures and one of them was on a  kill.  Walrus and Arctic fox.  We shot an Ice Wall that is 100’s of kilometers longs with ware falls at just the right light.  We shot a bird cliff where I have never seen so many birds.  So, over the coming weeks you’ll find a ton of images here on a daily basis, plus give em a few weeks and I’ll have a trip log of this trip.  I am home for a few weeks before leading a workshop in the Palouse.  So, let’s start out with a classic Iceberg shot.  Funny to all dressed up in winter gear in July.

Classic Zion

Classic Zion
Classic Zion

A few weeks ago I was in Zion National Park shooting images that will be used in an upcoming video article on the Olympus EM1 and the Fuji XT1.  This is the classic shot for Zion.  Every National PArk has a spot like this.  At sunset you can’t even get a spot on the bridge where this was taken as there are usually dozens of photographers.  In any case I had fun shooting this and working the image to what I present here.
