If you have been reading this blog for a while you know how much I like the Palouse. The Palouse is a region in SE Washington state that has beautiful rolling hills. I June the fields are greener than green and in August they are gold when the harvest takes place. This image is one of the greener moments. Photographed from a location I discovered by accident and usually where I shoot sunrises.

The All Defining Palouse Image
The Palouse is obviously one of my favorite places for photography if you haven’t figured that out. The image above is of a barn on the main highway leading to Colfax and Pullman. I have passed this location dozens of times over the last few years and have photographed it just as many. Many times it is one of the stopping points on my workshops. This last trip the American flag looked new. We also stopped at the location when the sky was beyond perfect. Add to that the wheat was golden and there was a nice green patch thrown in. It’s kind of the all about Palouse defining image. It has gotten nearly a 1000 likes on social media and I am just itching to make a print of it. I might even offer it up as a stock image. You gotta love the Palouse.
Palouse Storm #2
This is just another image from a very large series of images I have of the Palouse that I photographed in June. As I have mentioned in previous posts the sky is so dramatic in the Palouse. I love the weather in the big sky and work hard to find cool images when I see it coming.

Stormy Sky #1 Palouse
One of the things that are special about the Palouse is what I call the big sky. The sky is part of the Palouse and many times actually becomes the focus of the image. Whether the skies are blue with puffy clouds or dark and gray with an approaching storm, they are always special.

Farm In The Palouse
I’m going to be in the Palouse again from August 10-17th photographing the harvest. The Palouse region is one of my favorite places to photograph in America. It’s always different and there are no cliched image locations. You need to seek out and find the shot. There are rolling fields of green wheat in the early summer and golden wheat in August. This photo is of a typical farm and with what I call the Palouse sky. Always something special.

Crop Dusting In The Palouse
One of the cool things about the Palouse is you just don’t know what you will find around the next corner. One day while shooting on our workshop we turned a bend in the road and we saw this crop duster do amazing low flights over fields of wheat. So, naturally we stopped and took photos. This is one of them.
If you are interested in photographing the Palouse, let me know as an opening just became available on our June Workshop.
Abandoned Farm House
One of the things that have always made the Palouse un to explore is the abandoned houses and trucks that can be found in many places. Unlike other places, I visit it seems that a lot of times somewhere along the way folks just one day decided to pack some things and leave their homes. it’s not uncommon to find homes that have been abandoned for 20 plus years. Sometimes there is furniture and personal belongings in these homes.
The home above is one of these. There were a barn and a garage with this home but they were burned down in 2017. That is happening more and more too in the Palouse and is a who;e other stories. In any case, as a photographer, I like trying to capture these places and make the viewer ask what was the story?
Palouse Farm
One of my favorite places to photograph in America is the Palouse. It’s not crowded with tourists and it is all about the landscape and big sky. The landscapes are big and broad and many time can be shot with a long lens like this shot. As the sun peeks around the clouds interesting shadows are cast and as the sun gets lower at the end of the day you get these beuatiful defining shadows of the gentle rolling hillsides. I am doing 2 private 4 person workshops there this summer.
The Grand Palouse
As I have said a hundred times, the Palouse is America’s Tuscany. While it doesn’t have the beautiful cities and villages that Tuscany has it does have some magnificent rolling hills that transform with the seasons. The harvest is still my favorite time of year. I do plan to do a June visit in 2016 and capture the Palouse when it is green. For now this is a pano shot made from the top of a small hill.
Bringing In The Wheat
The Palouse is one of my favorite places to photograph. If you are a regular to my blog you know I have many images made there. I love the harvest time which usually takes place in early August. This past year it was very dry and the harvest came very early. The Palouse suffered a very hot summer and thus it was dry and dusty. This image show the harvest and the dry dusty wind.
