I am now back from a super trip to Iceland and will try to catch up with the blog posts here. I have so many images to share not too mention fun stories. Iceland is such a beautiful place. No matter where you look there is something gorgeous. This shot was made with fellow photographers Drew, Peter, Steve and we were traveling a rough road out to the snow fields. Yes it is summer here but plenty cool and snow there. I love it. This is a hiking hut and outhouse. Kind of looked cool in BW and with the outhouse as a g=foreground.

The Falls
Every time I come to Iceland I stop at this location and shoot these falls. You may notice they are the header sot for my blog. I have a new set of falls to replace the header soon. This shot was taken the other day and was made from 3 stitched images from an IQ180 and 28mm lens. This has been an amazing trip to Iceland this time. After two weeks I head home tomorrow.
One Cool Week
So strange to read weather reports back home about how hot it is. As I lead a workshop group through the many beautiful locations in Iceland I find I am always dressing in layers. Sometimes the wind bellows and it feels like winter. Other times it is in the 30’s. No matter what though we have a had a week of amazing color, weather and a chance to shoot with 14 great people with a true passion for photography. You can follow the adventure at www.podas.info.. The image above was done at The Glacial Lagoon as the moon set. It never gets dark, just kind of this blueish grey light. Hard to sleep when it is never dark and we find ourselves out at 2-5 AM in the morning. Lots of fun, great image that you will soon see more of.
Big Boat
This is a B&W shot of an old Great Lakes Steamer. It has been in Saugatuck, MI for what seems forever. It’s rusting and falling apart. On June 4th they are moving this boat to a new location in Canada and will be restoring it. That will be quite a site as it is towed out the river. Wish I could be there, but I will be in Iceland.
Jagged Ice
This shot was made in Iceland at the Glacier Lagoon. I used a long lens on my 5dII to shoot elements of the ice. Tight shots of ice using the telephoto to compress the perspective together. It was amazing what you saw as a frame when doing this vs. what the overall scene looked like. I enjoy using the camera frame to isolate images. I do this both with the telephoto lens and macro lens doing close ups.
Ice Everywhere
No matter where you look there is ice. I guess Iceland gets the name with ice in it for a reason. In certain parts of Iceland there are many glaciers and I am talking really big glaciers. And these Glaciers loose Ice all the time. This is a shot of an iceberg with a big glacier behind it. I believe the glaciers is called Steinholtsjökull, good luck on pronouncing it. This glacier like a lot of others has a lake at the bottom of it that icebergs break off into and float around. With all good landscape shots it is good to have a foreground and the iceberg did a great job of providing the foreground against this large glacier.
Glaciers and a New Setting Sun
My inventory of beautiful landscapes is large and last night I was sorting some images from Iceland and came on this. I cleaned it up a little bit and wanted to share it here today. Iceland is one of the most majestic places on the planet. I will leading a workshop there end of MAy 2012 so stay tuned for information on that. This shot was made at Jokulsarlon bay which is a lagoon that is filled with icebergs from a very large glacier nearby. These icebergs float around the lagoon eroding and taking on the most mazing forms. Then they are washed out to sea and some of them land on the beach nearby at low tide. The whole area is just amazing.
Black and White Waterfall
When I shoot moving water – like waterfalls, fast moving streams and such I do what is called dragging the shutter. This makes a very sur-real image that is somewhat magical. This waterfall is in Iceland and I loved the way the water ran off the rocks at the bottom of the fall. I converted the image to BW and settles on this effect.
Cool Horse
Icelandic horses are some of the toughest and nicest horses in the world. They just have life all figured out. Strong and sturdy yet sort of small. They have these long manes that just blow in the wind and great strong eyes that penetrate you and catch you. They remind me of rock stars, long hair blowing in the wind and they just know they are bad ass. I shot this in color on a Phase One P65+ then turned it into BW on the iPad.
Stairs
I love circular staircases. The perspective and how they fade away and repeat patterns has always intrigued me. Today’s shot was made at the Hilton in Iceland. I was sitting in the bar and there was this giant staircase that was more or less a circular one. I played with a number of shots and settled on this one. Enhanced it a bit on my iPad.
